The crazy Hawk fans are constantly wanting the heads of the football and basketball coaches, but the reality is that it appears that cooler heads are prevailing there, and that's a good thing for them. JP is being a cooler head for ISU.

I have been following ISU sports since 1970, graduated from ISU in 1988, have a current ISU sophomore, and wish that the Cyclones would win more than they always have and currently do. The bowl game outcome was disappointing, the FAMU game stunk, but there are too many things to be excited about to let those events stop donations and stop season ticket purchases,

that's the man that you believe has a good feel on the pulse of the fanbase?

Uhhh... yeah. He knows the fanbase real well. He knows that a vocal minority ******** and whining on social media does not represent most of the fanbase and, frankly, we will tolerate losing a lot longer than most fanbases. It's a big reason why we have continued to grow and expand our athletics despite all the crappy coaching you point out. We haven't had to over extend ourselves trying to hire a new coach every other year.

A nice letter, but cherry picking the Big 12 tournament as some monumental accomplishment drives me nuts. They are fun and all but hardly an indicator of some kind of large scale success.

Pollard himself probably put 10 minutes of thought into that message. He told someone the points he wanted to make and he approved the final copy. Let's not pretend this was some heavy lift on his part.

CSP has not done any worse than CFH. The best NCAA performance by an ISU coach has been a guy who possibly was dealing with addiction.

I know someone whose job is to write letters for the president of a major university. She writes a lot of letters, but this is not the kind of thing she writes. Letters that lay out the vision of the university the president writes herself. I think it is probably the same for JP.

I don't like how this letter and some fans keep acting like this is the first time in five years Prohm has stubbed his toe. This is a pattern that has been developing his entire time at ISU. Off the top of my head he lost a home opener to Milwaukee, lost at home in a historic blowout to a Rick Barnes coached Tennessee team, two no shows against Iowa, and FAMU is just the latest. He's had some good wins yes, but four of his seven top ten wins were in his first two years with Hoiberg's players. With Prohm the highs have been great but the lows have been some of the lowest I'ver ever seen, some consistency would be nice.

This letter was sent out for two reasons:

1) Jamie needs donations to INCREASE, not stay where they have been. He has 4 major construction projects (NEZ, Parking/skywalk, Hilton and the mixed-use development between Jack and Hilton), 1 expensive football coach, and the expectation that TV revenue fill not keep increasing after the current deal is up. The current state of the farm economy isn't helping this either...

2) Losing to Iowa in football for half a decade, loosing consecutive bowl games after MASSIVE fan turnout, basketball under-performing 3 straight years, women's basketball loosing to Iowa consecutively and the disappearance of Hilton Magic (team not fan). Fans have heavily invested in the last 3 years, to show for it they have 1 bowl victory of a non power 5 team.. It sucks to hear this but when TOE is doing well it only compounds these issues

I appreciate the reminder that we just left probably the best athletic decade in our school's history. But fans live in the now.

I don't rally want to get into how the current political climate and wealth disparity between coaches and AD's affects fans either, so I'll just leave it at that..

I'm implying that JP is an outstanding AD and that I presume he learned from the above and that no, Prohm won't get four losing seasons.

The Big 12 tournament winner gets an automatic bid to the NCAA tourney. Until that isn't the case, it is an important tournament.

And people wonder why Pollard had to write this letter...

Not to mention that a tournament championship can also help out to move your seeding up a line or two on Selection Sunday, plus give the team a lot of positive momentum heading into the Big Dance (not that that has always worked out for us).

But, it's easy to minimize accomplishments when they happen under a coach you just don't like to begin with, I suppose.

I too know professional communicators at universities and this is exactly what they do. Every day, all the time. The president, or athletic director, or dean that writes his/her own public communications is rare; most everything is delegated to staff whose job it is to understand institutional priorities and the "voice" that the leadership wants to project. People like Pollard tell communicators what they want out of the message and ultimately review/edit/approve but don't do most of the work. (And it's possible Pollard actually did write this himself. I just think it's unlikely.)

So relax. It isn't some personal insult to Pollard to say he probably didn't write this himself, because it's still "him" talking. And in fact, it would be high praise to his staff that it was so well-written that people think Pollard did it himself.
