I get the whole Bulls thing (because it is a proven sexy team) but I just can't wrap my mind about leaving what you have here for the Timberwolves (even with a #1 pick).

I think this deserves it's own thread.
Seems pretty obvious that TJ is probably going to get handed the job, and those in the know are doing their best to sell us on this move.
It's nothing against TJ, but his resume isn't what you'd want to replace Hoiberg. I'm sure he's a great guy and obviously a good recruiter and basketball mind, but it's hard selling me on the idea that he's ready to be the head guy here.

You know how you constantly hear about "head coaches hate recruiting", "recruiting is a grind"? TJ likes recruiting, and he's better than decent at it.
CBB = 80% recruiting, 20% coaching
We love mediocrity at ISU so, don't bet on it.
He gets credit for the B12 contract money and the fact that to a lesser extent than basically all other B12 schools we had a few facility upgrades, people think he walks on water.
He seems to struggle with hiring and retaining coaches though.
I'm still frustrated about his previous "former ISU assistant" who loves Ames and "wants to be here" that he hired to be a Head Coach on the other side of the parking lot.
TJ is likely to be a Head Coach someday. And probably a pretty good one. The guy can recruit.
And as far as his coaching resume is concerned, it is actually a much better resume than Fred had when Fred was given the ISU Head Coaching job with absolutely ZERO coaching experience.
I would like to see ISU get a coach like Archie Miller. At the same time, I am not completely opposed to TJ Otzelberger. There is a possibility of some continuity and probably continuing in the same style of up tempo basketball. Much worse candidates out there than TJ Otzelberger. And it is quite possible he could even be the best choice for ISU.
That might be the case for programs like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, etc... because they will simply put more talent on the floor then most teams can compete with. For most of the other programs out there they better have a coach in place that has the X's and O's ability to outwit their opponents or they are going to be nothing more then average.
The last time ISU had a coach that went with the 80% recruiting 20% coaching philosophy we had Wayne Morgan and watching his teams play street ball while he took a nap on the bench was brutal.
You may want to recheck your source on this.JP hasn't reached out to donors to pony up more money
Johnny Orr had a winning Div 1 record before he came to ISU. Same for Floyd, LE, Morgan and McDermott. Fred had 10 years in the NBA plus front office experience.
We have just had 4 consecutive teams in the NCAA tournament and have $2.5M coaching salary.
After all this, we are now back to looking at hiring an assistant coach if Hoiberg leaves. When did we become Drake.

Maybe Otz is the next Ben Jacobsen. Maybe Otz is the next Brad Stevens. Both assistants who were hired from within after the head coach left. And Archie Miller was an assistant before being hired as HC of Dayton.
I would be cautiously excited to see what TJ could do.
Well that's who you're looking at if you don't want TJ here, I know which one I'd rather have. 80% recruiting, 20% coaching.
I agree with these guys. Gameday coaching at most levels is tremendously overrated. It's all about who has the horses and who doesn't. You can prowl the sidelines like a maniac, screaming and yelling and flailing your arms, but the players are going to play the game. I'm cautiously optimistic at what Otz can do as a head coach and if he is the choice I will welcome him with open arms. You know how you constantly hear about "head coaches hate recruiting", "recruiting is a grind"? Yep. We are being sold the tj thing right now. And I know that Many that run this site are friends with him and think he can be an equal to Fred. But I wish they'd realize that by billing him as the best option, they are really setting him up for trouble.Seems pretty obvious that TJ is probably going to get handed the job, and those in the know are doing their best to sell us on this move. It's nothing against TJ, but his resume isn't what you'd want to replace Hoiberg.
