Worth a Laugh

lol it's really not normal to have that many people sue you in your life. wtf mates

No kidding.

He is right (he wrote in the comments section), that is a pretty cheap shot from the Register. Although now that he is a public official, I suppose its fair game.

I don't know the guy at all and only have seen how he has handled CN, and I'm just not impressed. Anyone who predicted ISU to go 11-1 or whatever is just bat**** crazy.

He went to West. Graduated in 96. Older sister graduated in 94. Little ones go to catholic middle school and then Central.

Poor guy - West has never been the nicest HS in the city, but that's not saying much since I'm a '97 North grad. At least we both can agree on one thing - it's great neither of us are ***-Clown Ka-nig-hits!!!

It's kind of sad that Central, 10 years later, is the "best" HS in the city. Of course, that's just because the school board decided they wanted to "distinguish" Central from the other schools and are bussing all of the inner-city kids that ordinarily would go to Central to North and West. Both my wife and I are in agreement - there's no way we're sending our kids to any of the Davenport schools. There's also a certain "snootiness" that comes with the populous of Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley that we don't want our kids to pick up, so that rules them out. We decided long ago that we're not moving to Illinois, so that leaves North Scott as our only option (and we like the school district and all of our close friends live in Eldridge anyway)

Cheap shot? Probably? As noted, he's a public official.

However, I'm not concerned for him over it because he's taken many a cheap shot at others. It's just that karma thing.

I'm certainly not dancing in this, not one to take pride in other's misery. But I do see the irony/humor here looking at the situation and what I know of it.

Exactly how I feel. I don't really care about the guy and wish him no personal ill will but what goes around comes around.

All things about his past aside. Does anyone care if the things he is saying wrt the DSM are true?

I seem tons of comments in this thread about him and what he has done or should do and what type of person he is. I don't know him, I have only heard him speak on the radio a few times, and I do not have kids in the DSM school district. But for those of you who do, does any of what he is saying concern you?

He is not representing ISU athletics. He is "stuck like the blood-sucking leach that he is" and keeps trying to insinuate himself on us. He was an ISU-hating hawkfan, until D*ace decided to give him a job, ruining what D*ace hadn't ruined on his own at CN.

Dude couldn't run a self-flushing toilet factory. Dude couldn't lead kindergartners to a candy store.

I've lived in a small town my entire life until this month when my wife and I moved to West Des Moines. Obviously we won't be in the DM school district but I know the type of problems that he claims exist - exist all over. Unfortunately it's the way the world works nowadays, but that doesn't make it right.

I think a lot of his claims towards the school board are correct but I think he's going about things completely wrong. The board has to vote on things together and just getting in there with guns blazing is going to do nothing but get him in more legal problems because of what and how he says certain things towards other board members. It's one things to raise awareness of the issues but at the same time the person in question is becoming just as big of an issue in and of themself. You can't expect people to get on with their work if you're creating fires they have to be putting out instead of planning for the future.

The issues that are claimed against the DM school board are similar in nature to ones that could be made against most any elected board throughout the country, this just happens to be a little more messy than the average place would probably have. I think those things bother all of us but it's up to the voters to use their power to change things next election cycle - not for one loud individual to try throwing everybody under the bus that could actually change things now. You can't demand people make changes if at the same time your calling them names.

I think the problem with doing things the way this person has is that he tries to portray himself as being above corruption and beyond our morals but then his record is anything but clean. One can claim that everybody else is corrupt and blind but after a while maybe that person needs to have a checkup of their own. Maybe that person should hold themself to the same level of criticism and moral integrity that they hold others to.

While I think ******** is a blowhard, I don't see what his personal finances have anything to do with him being on the DM School Board.

The DM School System is a mess, just like ******** claims, why else did they hire former State Auditor Richard Johnson a couple years back as a consultant to try to get the mess figured out. I applaud ******** for trying to clean it up.

Public official or not its still a cheap shot. All the writer of that story had to do was go to Iowa Courts online to get the info, pretty in depth reporting there.

This is just more proof that the Register tries to make news rather than reporting the news.

For the same reason that potential employers will look at your credit rating in their decision whether to hire you or not. If they can't keep their house in order, how can they be expected to keep anyone else's?

EXACTLY. Here we have a guy trying to get the school board whipped into shape and he can't even take care of his own finances.

One of the big problems is in DSM, you have to generate news or no one will buy your paper, there is just not enough going on to go out and look for stories.

I have to agree on both sides of that question - I think this probably was a digging expedition but I also know that the person in question seems to be in the middle of everything and the article helps put his criticisms towards other board members in perspective.

I wouldn't want my info public but I'm not trying to criticize others for their handling of money and such. If I was a public figure by choice that also happened to be very vocal about corruption and inproprities, I would hope I would be open to the same criticisms that I was dishing out.

I contend that if he would spend less time making enemies, this would be virtually a non-issue.

Well that's exactly it. If he worked with people to get results instead of accusing them of things, he wouldn't find himself in these situations. The Register isn't going to print articles about how well somebody manages their finances and they aren't going to pick fights for no reason - they report what sells money and they report about those that create noise.

Do anyone honestly thing the DMR dug for this story? Could be true...but a more likely scenario is...

Jon irritates person.
Jon continues to irritate person.
Jon goes out of his way to **** off person.
Person knows Jon has a debt or two. Someone informs person about other debt.
Person does a little quick online homework on Jon.
Person provides info to the DMR.
DMR does their own homework using a crayon.
DMR holds onto it for a rainy day.
DMR publishes story on dull day.

I'm not saying every time someone irritates you, you retaliate. What I am saying is, I don't know many friends of Jon. I know a ton of people that dislike him or consider him an enemy. Eventually, going down that road for a long period of time, you're going to upset the wrong person and they'll seek revenge.

Compound that with him being a public figure making waves and...bam...story.

Thats something I think is rediculous also. Just because someone has bad credit doesn't mean they wouldn't be a good worker. I can see the credit check thing being good if the employee was handling money. but I won't even get started on that.

But in ********'s case the Board doesn't handle the money. They vote on what the money should be spent on and the votes are subject to open records laws so you can see who voted for what.

Anywho its just typical Register garbage.

Voting on how money is spent, especially big dollars like that, is in effect - handling money.

Exactly, but you can see how he voted, so if you think he is being shady with school board money then you can not vote for him when he is up for re-election.

Man I can't believe I am defending him, starting to feel sick, might have to go home from work. He was 1 of 2 reasons I quit going to the "other"site.

It's ok, everyone needs a devil's advocate.

But I never said he was being shady with money. I just don't think he's smart with it (not that I am).
