World War III???

interesting that while this happens, the US Stock market is up over 300 pts at the moment... (1245 pm MDT)

FWIW- the neocons considered the Cold War WWIII, so this would lead to WWIV in their terms...

I think the biggest problem, is that we train the Georgia military, to defend themselves from Russian/Ossetian/Aserbaijanian intervention, and then they go ahead and do this.

We need the Georgians friendly with us, because frankly, they have a strategic location.

We don't need to directly challenge the Russians on this, because they WILL escalate the conflict.

This will take some fancy footwork to keep from brewing over into something big.

this is russia becoming an expansionistic country again and trying to destabilize the region. we must tread carfully here

I'm sorry, but I think this is a BIG reminder of why America keeps troops posted in foreign countries.

Even when you figure in all the mistakes we've made in foreign policy over the last 50 years or so, we're STILL the only "big kid on the block" who will help our friends defend themselves and not expect to get a controlling interest in their countries when it's over. And don't get me started with our English buddies and the absolute Mongolian Goat Rodeo they caused in Basra with their "cut deals with Mookie Al'Sadr & his militias then sit it out when America finally comes in to clean up your mistakes" non-strategy.

America gets a lot of crap from foreign governments, but most of it is because we're the only country with semi-superpower status that won't go after the families & friends of those who criticize us with a hammer & a blowtorch.
I agree.

There is nothing in American experience or in American political life or in our culture that suggests we want to use hard power. But what we have found over the decades is that unless you do have hard power -- and here I think you're referring to military power -- then sometimes you are faced with situations that you can't deal with.
I mean, it was not soft power that freed Europe. It was hard power. And what followed immediately after hard power? Did the United States ask for dominion over a single nation in Europe? No. Soft power came in the Marshall Plan. Soft power came with American GIs who put their weapons down once the war was over and helped all those nations rebuild. We did the same thing in Japan.
So our record of living our values and letting our values be an inspiration to others I think is clear. And I don't think I have anything to be ashamed of or apologize for with respect to what America has done for the world. [Applause.]
We have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years and we've done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own, you know, to seek our own lives in peace, to live our own lives in peace. But there comes a time when soft power or talking with evil will not work where, unfortunately, hard power is the only thing that works.

it doesn't help that NATO/US/European countries are pressing russia's buttons with the whole missle defense system being planned... the chess match continues and each move escalates the risk of something very bad happening....

Phaedrus- do you know by chance how many US troops/marines are in Georgia?

Figures that the world should end when I have the highest hopes for football.

It's a defensive system. Should everyone just lay prostrate in front of the aggressive countries of this world? Is that your solution to world peace? Didn't exactly work out for Chamberlain, did it?

Appeasement

"the aggressive countries of the world" .... does the US fit in that category?

oh and thanks for the history lesson on appeasement, I feel so enlightened now!

There's nothing the U.S. can or should outside of diplomatic efforts. One person suggested that the U.S. should introduce a resolution in the Security Council commending Russia for supporting indiginous independence movements, and claiming that it sets an international precedent for outside powers intervening in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation, forcing both Russia and China to oppose it. It wouldn't accomplish anything on the ground, but it would at least embarass the Russians internationally, as they are actively supressing several internal independence movement, Chechnya being the most prominent. No need for anyone to get their undies in a a bunch over this.

Bottom line up-front:

Georgia has attacked Ossetia, a breakaway province of Georgia, with their military, today. So, tonight Russia attacks Georgia with their military.

Ummm, Georgia is our ally right now, and the US has troops there, advising their military. I'm pretty darned sure that Georgia didn't exactly consult with us before they attacked Ossetia. In fact, I happen to know that this is as big a surprise to us, as it was to Russia.

Anyone else ever hear of a dude named Ferdinand, and a dude named Gavrilo Princip?

This, no matter how it turns out, is NOT going to be good.

I think prayers and thoughts should be with the leaders of Georgia, Russia and the US, right now.

I know the upcoming football season has everyone hyped, but this has the possibilities of turning out worse than we can imagine.

You mean someone is going to start it before we get a chance to invade Iran! Bush would never allow that...have some pride, man.

Call me optimistic, but I think this is going to blow over.

Besides, if it WERE the end of the world, we'd have Jon Miller over here condemning Kirk Ferentz for the way he handles his program. So until I see that seal opened, I'm gonna assume we're NOT in for Armageddon.

let's just hope cooler heads prevail on this.... the first two hot world wars were on European soil, I doubt they want a third... but then again in this insane world, nothing surprises me.
