Dumb question... Why does a 2x2x8 furring strip measure 1.5x1.5x8?
Same reason I presume a 2x4 measures 1.5x3.5.

I’ve done work on old homes where a 2x4 actually measures 2x4. I suspect sometime in the 50’s or 60’s lumber sizes adjusted to todays standards for an unknown reason to me.

They’re cut to 2x2 or somewhere around there when they’re wet but after drying/milling/planing they’re cut down to the nominal size of 1.5x1.5.

Actually, 2X4's were originally downsized to 1 5/8" X 3 5/8". Sometime in the 1960's/early 1970's I believe the 1.5" X 3.5" became the standard.

I always assumed 2x4 was the size it is because after 1/2 drywall it's then 4.
I'm sure that probably isn't the reason.

For dummies like myself, I'd love to see them marked something like 2x2x8 "Actual measurement 1.5x1.5x8".

Any suggestions on jigs for floating shelf brackets? Need to drill a 9” hole for the mounts but with a 12 inch shelf, that isn’t within the range of my tabletop drill press.

No but I think I'm going to try Rubio Monocoat on a table I'm building. No VOCs and only 1 coat for application
I like Odie's Oil. No mixing either. I have use Arm R Seal, but not on poplar. I like it, but it is a littler more sheen on it than I would like for some projects. I also like the wood bowl finish from General as well.

I’m really looking forward to this event this weekend. Should be tons of fun if you like hand tools:

https://handworks.co/

It’s a hand tool expo in the Amana Colonies, if anyone is interested.
I'm planning on running down there Saturday morning to listen to Roy Underhill. If you've never heard him speak in person he's fantastic. I bought a shirt off him from the back of his mini-van last time they had the show. I also plan on giving Lost Art Press some money while I'm there.
