Wide Receiver Hype

The receivers weren't giving up 15 yards on 4 yard outs all game long to the Iowa offense. And as awful as Butler's drop in overtime was, he was still on the wrong side of the first down marker and the result was likely a field goal attempt even if he caught it.

Eh, if he just catches it and falls backwards his 6'6" frame likely gets a first down if not damn close. Anyways, if the position as a group catches the ball in the first half we likely have more than 10 points. Oh well, I think Iowa is a really good team, and our offense showed plenty tonight, just simply pointing out the easy catches that were dropped. Let's get Akron and go into big 12 play 2-1!

Iowa scored 38 points in regulation, the problem was not the receivers. The Defense just ran out of gas in the end. a 7 point lead with 3 minutes should be plenty against Iowa...

I don't disagree with you. But our defense was expected to be below average. We need to be able to win shootouts against teams like Iowa, if we want to be successful, period.

He had two defenders on his back. It would have been pretty hard to fall backwards. I don't disagree with your point, just hard to point fingers at the receivers when the defense allowed the Iowa offense to dink and dunk all day long.

Tazclone would love this thread. He's been pointing out for months on here and on Rivals that our receivers drop way too many passes.

Agreed, but that's not my point. In retrospect, my frustration clearly lies with us not being able to beat Iowa in a shootout, which is what every single one of us would have preferred going into this game. It's just frustrating that our receivers were open all day and seemed to drop big passes in big spots.

I thought the receivers played ok, yes there were drops but there were also big catches. Montgomery was amazing. If I'm being honest I'd never have imagined he'd do that to Iowa's defense. Kid is a one man offense at times.

Absolutely, they have been over-hyped. I think back to the major hype that was placed on receivers from the Rhoads era e.g. Q. Bundrage and Dvario Montgomery as examples. Lazard and Butler are definitely some big bodies to throw to but they are by no means polished receivers.

Whatever happened to Montgomery? Didn't he transfer out or something like that?

Yeah, I hear ya. But we had 3-4 drops in the first half that were huge, and Butlers drop in OT was obviously huge. Just frustrated after years of hyping up the passing game.

Judging the quality of the receiving corp by a couple drops in 1 game is foolish. They are obviously every bit as advertised - just use your eyes

I think this was all due to Wadley. He greatly effected how ISU schemes their D all game.

Wadley and Fant are one hell of a combo. After looking at the back of his jersey for the whole first half we had to throw safeties over the top of him the whole second half. Bottom line either Fant or Wadley get matched up with a LB.

I think he's pointing out the trend over the years which did not really die this game. For success this team has to make the routine plays consistently. That said you can't expect any team to play a perfect game and our WRs were average today.

Butler will be a crowd favorite...

A caller brought this up on the reaction show, but I would like to see more short dump passes to Montgomery. Our receivers are still really really good (despite what some of you think), and by opening up another threat with Montgomery down low, that can only help open up our receivers down field. After going back and watching the highlights, some of the best plays were Montgomery's receiving plays. And there were numerous times where he seemed open in the middle of the field and Park chose to through it deep instead with a 50/50 chance of connecting.

Not sure this unit is set yet. I look for Eaton to get more PT as he gets more acclimated. Don't know if DS is in the dog house, but we aren't even looking for him and he was our big play threat last year.

The unit that appears over hyped are the TE's...
