Why not Loney?

Per M&M, Loney told them he really, really wants this job.

None of our current players have even heard of Loney. I'd be worried about defections and decommits with that kind of hire. He would make an excellent offensive coordinator, but we need to either hire a proven head coach or hire someone on an interim basis.

The reason why he left the first time is because he wanted to diversify his resume for being a HC in the long run. Remember we were 1-10 after that season and luckily Gene Smith was very patient with Mac. No way Loney gets the job if Gene decided to let Mac go at that point. He came back because Mac is his friend and wanted to right the ship for him and ISU. The second time he left for the NFL-to help diversify himself again.

I know what his explanation was, but it was seen around here as not having confidence in Mac turning the program around. For Pete's sake, Loney was an OC at I-AA UConn when Mac did him a favor and hired him on his first staff at ISU.
You can become a HC faster by being a coordinator on a staff that is successful, instead of diversifying. He has been a job-hopper ever since, and unfortunately will be out of a job again in a couple of weeks.

Like I said he is a GREAT OL coach and that is what made those teams good. Marty Fine could have said "give the ball to TD" every play and the results would have been the same as long as Loney was coaching the line.

And as much as I like Bandhauer as a person he was not a very good QB.

I agree to disagree on the first part isufbcurt, but i do agree on Bandy. He's a great person, and although he set prolific passing records...he was an avg. college football qb.

You clearly don't know what you're talking about.

Are you going to hold that record at Morehead State against Loney, the one from 1981-1983? I expect he has learned a few things the last 25 years or maybe these NFL coaches wouldn't keep offering him jobs.

Sandy Hatfield Clubb, Drakes new AD from Arizona State and personal friend of Steves asks him to take the Drake job as an interim coach for one season as a favor.

Was it Loney that came up with that scheme we used when we had JJ Moses? You know, the one where JJ would go into motion and run a fake reverse on every snap?

That's been my favorite offense I've seen ISU ever run. Problem is we haven't had the personal run that since Moses. Seneca could have played that position imo.

Yes. I was watching a replay of the Insight Bowl a while back, and I was impressed with his late-game play-calling. ISU was up 6 or 7 points, with the ball with 4 or 5 minutes left, and Sage was throwing the ball all over the field. No "3 runs up the middle and punt"s that became the trademark of Mac's late game leads.

I don't know if he can recruit. I don't know if he can convince our existing players to stay. I don't know who he would have as coordinators, but I would be on board with hiring him.

I'd love Steve Loney...as on offensive line coach.

What is with some of our fans? We don't have to have someone connected to ISU.

Exactly. Even the big-time schools learn this lesson. OU tried with Gibbs, then Blake, and failed. They then went outside the family and hired Stoops.

That would have been Coach Hoenner (sp?) he came to us from TCU (i think) and put in the Bop motion in whih we faked the reverse to JJ almost every play.

At this point, I hope Loney doesn't get the job. Loney is too good of guy to have to go through this mess. Pollard didn't interview him the first time and I'm assuming he won't this time as well.

The bottom line on why not Loney is that he is known and he is an ISU guy. Pollard wants to make his name and he can't do that by hiring Loney, he can only do that by "discovering" someone.

I wouldn't have a problem with Loney at all. Maybe he is just a solid guy who gets the job done. We could use that right now.

Loney is a bad idea for HC, I don't care about his past experiences with Iowa State. I want someone who will keep our young players and I don't see him helping in that respect...

Getting Loney would not be good. He is old. He is not an up and comer. Not exactly the head coach I am looking for. True blue to ISU? Then he shouldn't have left ISU twice. He wants ISU bad because he doesn't have a whole lot of options. His last gig as a head coach was in the Pioneer League with Drake. Hiring Loney would be a bad move. It would send the message that we don't think we could get a good coach.

Love Steve Loney. Think he grades out best overall for my metrics (long-termness, career progression/talent, fit w/schoo....though i hate to say 'fit' w/o thinking of Jay Jacobs).

BUT people will bag on him b/c he's not a splash hire. And, as we learned with the McCarney retrospective from JP....Jamie has to make a splash hire so we can fund the growth vision.

Loney is a good coach and would give all his energy to ISU. Loney or Solich would probable stay here and not chase the next hot job like the last snake. They also would get ISU consistent 6 or 7 wins seasons(hey we're at rock bottom, 6 or 7 looks real good right now). I'm going to refrain from saying he would be a good fit. Fit and Steve Loney should not be used in the same sentence. Steve has a rather large waistline.
