Why not Loney?

On his own merits, Loney is an excellent coach. I loved his offenses at ISU, because he always kept the opponents guessing, and would run motion constantly just to set up a big hitter later in the game. I would not be sad to see him as the next coach, but he does have more question marks than some of the other candidates.

Thanks Splendid. I know Loney personally, but in my heart I think Gill would be an outstanding hire. But then we have to worry about his job being a pit stop again. With Loney, we won't have that. He's an offensive minded coach, whose offenses were awesome here. 1995-96 were record years, but our defense couldn't stop anybody. When he left our defense was getting good, but our offense lacked. When he came back in 2000 and put everything together..it was a 9-3 season.

This current Cyclone team reminds me of our 1997 team. We were 1-10 but had 17 redshirt/true freshmen playing then. Guys like Reggie Hayward, James Reed, Ben Bruns, Sage Rosenfels, etc. Young guys who blossomed with experience. That's how I feel about this current crop.

I agree about our current group of players. I just hope a new coaching scheme doesn't kill any momentum that hasn't yet begun.

According to the Ames Tribune today, Loney is interested but no one has contacted him yet. If this in fact true...that's disheartning.

STEEEEVE LONEYYYYY

Make the call Pollard. What have you got to lose? (other than your job, maybe some recruits, and possibly some current players but that could happen with any hire)

just saying....he has mac ties so jp will probably avoid him.

He hasn't worked with Mac for 7 1/2 years almost! People need to check their egos at the door and do what's best for ISU.

IF we hire Loney I'm done with everything ISU. HE IS NOT A HEAD COACH, he is a GREAT OL Coach but nothing more. People have short memories, I remember standing on the sidelines listening to the crowd boo and complain when he would run a draw play on 3rd down almost everytime.

Why?

the consensus seems to be that we need someone with head coaching experience, and Loney hasn't been a head coach at anywhere more prestigious than Morehead State, and that was 25 years ago.

I remember a couple of those instances. I also remember him calling a few plays that led to a couple of 2,000 yards seasons for our running back you may of heard of...Troy Davis. Todd Bandhauer, Sage Rosenfels and Seneca Wallace all flourished under his system. We had DOMINANT linemen who were not highly recruited either.

Some serious, hardcore irony here...

He left because he thought Mac was going to be the head coach forever at ISU.

What about when he quit Mac and ISU the first time, after the '97 season, to join the U of Minn Gophers? That was disgusting, and left Mac high and dry.
I mean, c'mon - I don't get this "Loney is a true Cyclone" stuff. He's left us numerous times.

Loney would be a great get. As for the whole "big splash," and recruiting thing, there are ways to deal with that. Loney bringing in some big name assistants would help in both those areas.

The reason why he left the first time is because he wanted to diversify his resume for being a HC in the long run. Remember we were 1-10 after that season and luckily Gene Smith was very patient with Mac. No way Loney gets the job if Gene decided to let Mac go at that point. He came back because Mac is his friend and wanted to right the ship for him and ISU. The second time he left for the NFL-to help diversify himself again.

Like I said he is a GREAT OL coach and that is what made those teams good. Marty Fine could have said "give the ball to TD" every play and the results would have been the same as long as Loney was coaching the line.

And as much as I like Bandhauer as a person he was not a very good QB.

Was it Loney that came up with that scheme we used when we had JJ Moses? You know, the one where JJ would go into motion and run a fake reverse on every snap?

That's been my favorite offense I've seen ISU ever run. Problem is we haven't had the personal run that since Moses. Seneca could have played that position imo.
