Why is Kinnick Stadium considered historic?

Weren't they historically bad through most of the 60s and 70s? I just always assumed that was the reason.

I actually (admittedly) think it's been a tough place to play when Fry changed the culture and they were decent in the 80's. It's probably a little tricky to focus on the game when home fans are throwing cigarette butts at you.

Add in that your program was the decent one when the other (ISU) was in bad shape and the big fish/small pond effect takes place.

'Historic' Iowa football is the equivalent of the person who started for a few sports teams in small-town high school and still talks about it 20-30 years later, which is what a lot of their fans are as it is.

Many Hawkeye fans call Kinnick Stadium historic, but I don't understand why. Is that just because it is old? Is the stadium a state historical site?

An old Sports Info director for the U of I once wrote that Kinnick was ' The Cathedral of College football", and it stuck w/ the media.

It was a pos crap structure till 1972, and called "Iowa Stadium" .

. a CR Gazette hack sports writer lobbied for yrs to change the name

When the name changed.....POOF ! Instantly "historic" Kinnick Stadium (overnight)

No bigger attention-wh#res than the U of Iowa, their fans, their media, their athletic dept.
.......The fraud ANF promo, the 'waving at sick kids' etc.

Guess what? If you're a drunk obnoxious Hawk fan in Kinnick watching a game---and wave at the sick kids in the new children's hospital, you're a still drunk obnoxious Hawk fan in Kinnick

It doesn't make you better than the next person, even though Iowa fans LOVE patting themselves on the back

It's really pretty funny how much this stuff triggers you.

Because they are a fan base and athletic department of gimmicks that tavern hoks go crazy for.

"Historic Kinnick Stadium"
"Historic Highway 965"
Card stunts
ANF even though they don't support farmers
Gator chomp
Spelling Iowa after touchdowns
Calling their logo "iconic"
Giving their logo a name "Tiger Hawk" when it actually looks like a chicken
Wearing Steeler uniforms
Holding hands and running onto the field and calling it a swarm even though they are not the hornets, yellow jackets or bumblebees
Pink locker rooms
Not that I really care one way or the other, but... Glass houses.

Of course not everything that is awesome originates from Iowa City.

Never said that it was. Just pointing out that Iowa didn’t copy Virginia Tech on Back in Black (mostly because to my knowledge Virginia Tech does not play Back in Black).
