Why Bo & Schwartz should be excited

At 12 carries a game, you only need to average 8.33 per carry to get a 100 yards.

I don't think we're going to run the rock much. I don't think his offense is built to do so. You'll occasionally run one, but other than that, passing is what fuels this engine.

Personally, I don't care if we wonly run it 12 times a game. That's fine with me. We have AA and some very good receivers. May as well take advantage of them and it's the perfect fit for his pass first offense.

Have you talked to the coaching staff about this? If the team can run the ball well, why not run it to keep the D off ballance. One big drawback of the spread is when Ds can key on the pass and stop it the team running the spread is screwed. Bring in a running game and it makes Ds pick their poision. PR has said he wants his O to be hard for Ds to get ready for, having both a passing and running game would be a big step in that.

Paul mentioned balance in his press release on Hermen, so I suspect the run will still be an important part of our game.

If you win, you will get on TV. The NFL will notice you anyway in the combine and on TV. Twelve carries may not seem like a lot, but two TDs a game will sound pretty good.

You should be banned to the hawk board where you belong.

If you get a lot of big runs you will be noticed also.

Palmer---try not to wet yourself everytime I post. You'll go through less underwear throughout the day.

Read the original post and my comment again.

No RB is going to be happy with 12 touches a game. That's what we gave the RB's and that's what he gave the RB's. No reason for them to be thrilled/happy/mildy optimistic based on what he did prior.

Now go stalk someone else, Palmer.

12 touches and 4-5 catches and winning and piling up 400-500 yards per game can be pretty fun..

Dont mind him he is a trouble maker. If you baught him a lap dance with 3 strippers he would be mad you didnt buy him 4 dancers.

You probably have a better shot to get to the NFL with 12 carries and 6 catches a game then you do 30 carries a game...
true. not only do the NFL guys like the versatility, but a RB that doesnt have a massive number of carries hasnt endured the same wear and tear of some others

Yeah, what I said was completely controversial and over the top.

I don't think you can compare Rice's offensive output to ours considering we play much better defenses throughout the season than they do.

Rice's stats include a pounding by Texas (saw the game, an Rice's offense still looked good but outperformed), Tulsa and Vandy, so I'm not buying the "much better defenses". Especially when looking at the Big 12 bowls.

Coach Herman will NOT play favorites, too good of a coach to do so, he just wants to win....

Hey, NewCyclone,

I want to say 'welcome!', and I want to ask you a question, too.

As you can see, like fans everywhere, we have individuals who take incomplete information and extrapolate conclusions from it. For example: Coach Herman will attempt to employ the very same strategy here (rushing QB) that he used at Rice.

I expect Coach Herman to develop a strategy for the weapons he finds at Iowa State, not force-feed Rice tactics on ISU's style of play.

Question: Based on your knowledge of Coach Herman, please tell us what you think Coach will do at ISU: Install a specific scheme and ask ISU players to conform to it, or install a specific scheme that makes best use of the skills of the players on hand?

Here's my take on the 2009 ISU offense's assets (spread offense):

KEY: 9 starters return

QUARTERBACKS

Austen Arnaud, JR, 6-3, 212, threw for 2800 yards in his first season as a starter. He's a big kid with deceptive mobility and a strong arm. RS FR Jerome Tiller, 6-4, 180, from Texas, is a nifty, speedy runner who we're all excited about, too, because of his athleticism. We're roster-short on QBs, hopefully Herman-Rhoads can land a fine one to sign next month.

A few here believe Herman's hire means Tiller will get the nod next fall. Arnaud, though, is a fine athlete with a tremendous lead in experience. He was a national QB recruit out of high school. I can't imagine Herman will ignore Arnaud's demonstrated assets.

RUNNING BACKS

Bo Williams, 6-1, 224 lbs, a top national recruit when he signed with Florida, will be a RS SO entering his first year of eligibility at ISU. We're extremely excited about what he brings to the Cyclone offense. Expectations for him are high.

Alexander Robinson (A-Rob), JR, is the returning starter. Lean (180 lbs.) but rugged, with fine speed. Lots of experience.

Another newcomer, RS FR Floridian Jeremiah Schwartz, 230 pounds-plus, is said to have fine power and deceptively good speed. Speculation here is that ISU might lose him to transfer, so we'll see what he thinks of the Rhoads-Herman tandem. Got a couple of goodlooking 3-star RB commitments.

OFFENSIVE LINE

I believe four starters, and eight of the top 10, return. A very young group at season's outset last fall, the unit seemed to develop in the second half of the season. ISU finished up at Kansas State with a 626-yard performance -- Arnaud set a school record with 440 passing yards (yet ISU lost the game . . . hope we get a DC whose stature matches Herman's). With a new playbook and a new line coach, can't help but wonder how long it will take a top 5 to gel. But, there is some talent here.

TIGHT ENDS (H-Backs)

SR Derrick Catlett has good hands but average speed, I think. Good blocker. Steady. JR Collin Franklin is the athlete/speed guy of the bunch, I expect Herman to exploit Franklin's athletic assets. He could be something else. SO Carter Bykowski played as a first-year freshman last fall. A top in-state ISU commitment, Conor Bofelli, has re-opened his recruiting since the coaching changeover, but can't imagine Herman won't have a major impact on the kid's thinking.

WIDE RECEIVERS

Ahhhh. . . . A group almost every Cyclone fan drools over.

SO Darius Darks (from Texas) set a school rookie record last fall with 49 catches. Four-star 6-4 Sedrick Johnson (from Texas) got a lot of PT as a true rookie. SR ex-Oklahoma H.S. Qb Houston Jones came of age, and big SR Marquis Hamilton, 6-3, 220, has been up-and-down but has skills. There are other youngsters here, too. JC rocket Darius Reynolds, the topic of much discussion here, has pledged to ISU.

We have decent kickers and a good punter returning, too.

NewCyclone, just wanted to give you a quick look at the kids Coach Herman will be working with in spring ball here. Hope this quick rundown is informative for you.

I don't think any RB is going to be excited about 12 carries a game, no matter what the system is.

Then please explain why Bo and Schwartz came here with Chizwhip promising 20+ carries a game and still expected that while the stats show 12.75 a game (which rounds up to lucky number 13, Professor).

The Big XII isn't the SEC in terms of defensively play, but for the most part there are better athletes playing defense in the Big XII than in Conference USA. In the two games against BCS conference teams, Rice's offense averaged 15.5 points and around 350 yards. Herman is a very good hire, but he will be dealing with a slightly different animal at ISU, although he obviously should have slightly better talent as his disposal as well.

Overall summary: Both Chizik's and Rice's offensive stats and therefore strategies were similar. Except that Rice's had more plays and more success.

Both had a single RB as top rusher, followed by QB, followed by a RB or TE.

If Schwartz and Bo were excited by Chizik's promises, then this should be good news. And as NewCyclone Rice fan says, new coach will not play favorites but best player.

To me seems pretty obvious this is a best case hire for the team AND the RB's. And I'm not intentionally excluding A-Rob - only mentioning Bo and Schwartz based on comments on the board that they're not happy and may be looking elsewhere.

Other than the rounding up part, does any other aspect of your post make the slightest bit of sense?
