West Ames Wendy's

I think there would be a decent chance that the owner would have tore it down and rebuilt it on that land but they don't own it. When the owner originally got into the business the first two stores he had were the two in Ames and he got them from the previous franchise owners. He was basically renting the land and the buildings for both stores on Lincoln Way. In the early 2000's he bought new land on Duff and moved the east Lincoln Way store and his plans were to eventually do the same on the west side. But like I said, sales have been dipping at the west store since the mid 2000's and after weighing the options he decided to just close shop and not build a new store. It's not like he's hurting for business since he owns Duff Ave, Marshalltown, and Clear Lake and I think he has partial ownership in the one in Newton.

How much of the lost business is because the west ames location is so poor compared to the duff one? One out in the student area of sw ames would do great (as would any fast food, its amazing nothing is out there)

Nothing about Duff is easy access. Nothing. That is the worst road in Iowa.

No kidding. That whole road is the definition of 'lack of any sort of planning'. Road really needs 6 lanes or frontage roads or something.

Sonic's are disappearing like crazy now days. I doubt a new one would spring up any time soon.

I live in Johnston directly across the street from one. Its always packed during the summertime pm's. 5 deep at drive thru and people parked everywhere. Lots of teenagers. This time of year it really slows down. I think they would benefit from a revamped food menu. They dont really offer much besides hot dogs and really really thin burgers. I think they would struggle in West Ames. I could see a hardees or subway going in and making it. I worked at the two Culvers all through high school and got to know the owners well. Flat out told me theres two key things it takes to make great $ in the fat food market, have multiple locations and have a great location and until the Westdale mall area took a dump they had two terrific locations for their stores.

Hopefully, he will get a renewed vision for West Ames at some point.

Sonic has lost a few around here but they arent disappearing nationwide.

I blame that more on poor decision making by the local franchisee though. For example, the location on 63rd street was absolutely awful. Down way south of the major traffic around grand\ashworth, nowhere near an interstate, and next to a UHaul. If you werent looking for sonic you might not even know it was there.

Johnston always looks like it gets good business, its on a major corridor and just a minute from the interstate. Same goes for Ankeny where its in a high visibility location.

Agreed. The Panchero's/Cold Stone parking lot is a trap. If I need to get anything over there I park at Best Buy due to the stoplight.

The Jimmy John's on Mortensen (in the same strip as West Towne Pub) closes at 11, and if you try to order delivery after 10, there's no guarantee. It's a traveshamockery.

It absolutely bothers me when people use the turning lanes on Duff as driving lanes.
