Weather for Tech - 6pm, Sub-20s

As soon as I knew the kick time, I started my layering outfit in my head. That includes three pairs of "pants" basically, maybe four. I'm going at least five layers on the torso.

I have a feeling I'm going to be like the little brother in "A Christmas Story"...

"I can't put my arms down..."
I've got some vintage Cenex overall's I'm gonna break out (circa 1978). Them sonsabitches are warm as heck. I will not be remotely cold.

I went to the USMNT game in St Paul last winter, night game with -15F wind chill. I was toasty warm and actually had my mittens off most of the time while drinking a quickly freezing beer. As far as I remember, here is what I wore:

- Two layers of long johns+socks
- Sweatpants+sweatshirt
- Snow pants+boots+coat
- Thin liner gloves under mittens
- Balaclava+stocking hat+neck gaiter
- Hand warmers in my mittens and the ones you stick to the bottom of your socks: https://a.co/d/bBnMAvW
- Assortment of 50 mL bourbons

I'm thinking I'll do something similar this weekend, maybe without the hand warmers and foot warmers to start.
I had to Google that. I thought you brought in the middle Eastern desert.

That’s really overstated by fans. Coldest game I ever attended was Baylor in 2018 and for the most part they outplayed us that day. We were fortunate to win that. Plenty of other examples where the southern team played just fine up north
What is overstated about this weather is that this is going to be ISU's first time playing in it as well. This isn't like the NFL where a team like Green Bay, Buffalo or Chicago get used to playing in sub freezing temps then get to face a southern or western team at home in December. Unless the team is doing everything outside this week, the cold will be as jarring for our players as it is for Tech.

I always give the example from my perspective of attending cold games. That first 50 degree game is pretty jarring for me as a fan because I have been used to 70+ degree weather. It's not the end of the world, but certainly can be jarring, especially with clouds and some wind.

Turn that around to the first 50 degree day in March, after a long winter and I'm usually in a T-Shirt and shorts and enjoying the nice weather. It's all about how much time you get to spend in that weather and adapt to it. Like I said, I hope they are using the cooler temps to our advantage and having the guys get used to it this week.

Headed clothing. Is that to get it or it does it? May need to check into them.
Explore. I don't have any or need to with my Cenex overalls but I would consider it. I know a guy that has 150 buck winter heated coat. Works amazing.

Those first couple of days of cold weather are tough, but it's infinitely tougher when you've either never experienced long stretches of cold weather or haven't in a number of years.

I lived in the PNW for a couple of years. Not exactly tropical, but a far cry from midwest levels of cold. The first year back was absolute agony, I never really adjusted to dealing with sub-freezing temps. The second year was quite a bit better.

Most of our roster has had at least one winter in Iowa, and I'd be surprised if a meaningful number of Tech players have ever experienced truly cold weather for more than a few days at a time.

I understand what you are saying and I'm not trying to say that one team won't have it harder than the other. I just think with this being the first truly "cold" game of the year, the difference isn't going to be as drastic as neither team has really had a chance to adjust to freezing temps yet. It's not like Tech won't be able to function at all, while ISU is running around like it's 70 degrees. I believe Tech will have a harder go of it trying to adjust. Especially being a night game.

I like our chances in the cold, but I do feel, at least for the first cold game of the year, that the old adage of a cold weather game is a little overblown for college. And that is mainly because the regular season is over before those biting cold temps usually hit for a long enough time to truly adjust to it.

Looking at the scenario... I'm thinking about 18° at game time. About 14° at the end of the game. Not a ton of wind but will bring things down closer to feeling like 5-10° during the game.

I'm having troubles finding the coldest games in JTS history. I believe they used to publish them in Media Guides but the 2022 version doesn't have this info. If anyone can lead this horse to water, I'd appreciate it.

That said, I know KU - 2013 was the coldest with a game time temp of 8°. Ames Municipal Data shown in the graph.

Colorado - 1991 Blizzard is number 2. It was 17° at game time. Ames Weather Station wasn't around so Des Moines Int'l Data shown in the graph.

This Saturday one would be up in the realm of that #2 range.

Agree.
The better team will win.
The weather card is stupid.

Pollard and the ISU athletics account both tweeted today about Saturday's weather. Gamesmanship.
