***WBB: 2024 Recruiting Thread***

Maybe, but most girls reach their max height by age 14-15. And even at that 5'8 on the lesser side. Ailie Tanke too is at that height and in HS it may work but the added dimensions of competition in D-1 make it tough.
Aili is listed at 5'10" on most sites. Quickness and athleticism tend to be bigger issue on a player making the jump to Big12 level.

If not too old of a metric I tend to believe the shorter heights offered though consensus is Tanke is 5'10. Not saying any of our recruits are not quick or athletic, but I do believe all things equal height is generally an advantage.

Prime example of an effective short guard - Rori Harmon. 5' 6"

5'8" is not on the lesser side of point guards at Iowa State's competition level, nor is it an indicator of a disadvantage.

These are the heights listed on each respective team's website for their roster of the shortest starting player on each of the Big 12 teams this year. Also of note, some teams have multiple starting guards below 5'8".
K State has tall guards, and Emily is of course listed at 5'11.
6', 5'11", 5'9", 5'7", 5'7", 5'6", 5'7", 5'5", 5'5", 5'3"

Let's say that starting guards does not equal quality guards.

Here are the heights of the 2021-22 year 1st and 2nd team guards.
The two shortest players were on Baylor, and they won the conference last year. The tallest guards would be Vivian Gray and Lexi.
6'1", 6'0", 5'11", 5'11", 5'9", 5'8", 5'7", 5'6"

Harmon was also a five star McDonald's All-American Top 10 recruit and not your typical short PG.
Good to know there are exceptions. Often the WNBA drool over great 6-foot guards such as our Alison Lacey. Spud Webbs can happen but are they the rule?

Why not an even shorter superstar guard 5'5" Morgan William who led Mississippi State over UCONN in the Final Four on a last-second buzzer-beater? I don't see short as always a negative or best. We are talking basketball here and skilled, usually quick, of lesser stature (for bb) can be great but in general, it is not the case.

Looks like we’re still in a good place with highly ranked 5’10” Britt Prince - maybe we sign a 1-2 Punch at PG in this post Emily Ryan class.

Tanke's Johnston team is playing right now in the state quarterfinal. Live-stream link (Tanke is #30 in white. 2026 Jenica Lewis is #10 in white):

Johnston up 34-23 at half. There don't appear to be live stats for the game and I'm not watching closely, but Tanke hit a three to close out the first-half scoring.

70-48 Johnston wins. They dominated the second half, as the score indicates. They play Thursday at 10:00am vs Waterloo West or Ankeny Centennial.

Tanke had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Lewis had 8 points, 6 assists, 4 blocks, 3 steals. Johnston has a very good team -- it's definitely not just those two.

The Johnston game vs Centennial is at 10:00 on Thursday. Also of interest Eric Crawford (from the MBB Staff) has a daughter Maya who is a very solid player on Centennial as a Soph.

Johnston didn't score for the first 6 minutes of the 4th quarter.

Got down 55-45 with 2 minutes left, and rallied big but missed two three-pointers on the last possession.

59-56 Pleasant Valley.

Tanke finished with 23 and 14, including 7 three-pointers.

Em is the last lady standing in our corner. She is pure Cardinal and Gold...what a rock-solid person

I'll give Ryan the highest award Iowa State has to offer: The Jack Trice Award.
There has got to be a Ride or Die shirt made. It has to happen even if I have to design it myself and nobody wants that.
