Was this really necessary DM Register?

Exactly. It's not a knock on ISU, it's just the fact that this is a $$$ move for the Big Ten, and with the small population base of Iowa, and weak TV footprint, it just wouldn't make financial sense.

BUT, when you take into play the academic side, it could make some sense. ISU ranks in the top 5 as far as research disclosures and licensing of technologies. It also does really well as far as getting major grants. If you consider more than just TV sets (academics), then ISU should be in play. Not that I think it's going to happen.

No, not really. Just pretty much fact. How did the Cyclones do in the draft??

Wow, congrats on your great draft. I hope that you can wear that polyester black jacket even prouder now.

Maybe cm can tell us about how OU's poor players and NFL representation again?

Unless I missed something, nobody knows how many teams are being added. It's not Delaney's job to save college football or destroy it. His job is to elevate the Big 10 brand and increase revenue. The guy brought one of the most storied football programs in history into the conference, expanded Big 10 bowl tie-ins, is responsible for bringing instant replay to college football, watched the conference's average football attendance increase by around 20,000 during his tenure, and launched the Big 10 television network. If you hate the Big 10 odds are you hate Delaney. I'm not a huge fan either, given that he's against a playoff system. But the guy gets it done and has helped make the Big 10 the most powerful conference in the country, which is why so many schools are trampling each other trying to get in. I guess you don't have to respect that, but I do.

And for what it's worth, I agree on the 16-team conference thing. I'd hate to see that happen. I hope we add one team (ideally Notre Dame) and end it.

The 16 team conference is my only beef. Only beef. Your thoughts are right in line with my Hawk friends. They all HATE the idea of a 16 team Big 10. I'd love to see the Big 10 add one team, get a title game, and CFB moves on as it is. I'm praying that 16 teams is a red herring.

I'm not going to argue the academic side of this, because I happen to agree. ISU is a very good school.

Unfortunately though, conferences look at far more than just academics, and rely 99.99% on athletics and the dollars they bring in. The Big Ten is a very good academic conference, but they do have the upper hand here, and have a good number of schools to choose from when it comes to both solid academics and athletics.

Not saying ISU isn't good at both, but with Iowa dominating the TV market in a small state, they have no reason to pick up the other few million. Not when they could, say, pick up the Kansas City and St. Louis markets by adding Mizzou.

Wow Frak and I thought we were pals?!?! I guess this gives me an opportunity to segue this in............

""""""""""""One of the more remarkable and telling numbers of the 2010 NFL Draft from the Iowa perspective was that the Hawkeyes trailed only Florida (9), Alabama (7), USC (7), and Oklahoma (7) in number of players drafted this year.""""""""""""

Incidentally ISU has a fine enuff academic profile but others have better and more to offer in athletics and TV sets.

Also and for the record, the was a huge bastardization of what I said and you know it. I said OU signs top 5 classes and Iowa signs top 40 classes and yet they produce scant few more NFLers. Aren't you glad you referenced me........

The reason ISU isn't getting in the Big 10 is tv sets. END. OF. STORY.

The Big 10 already has the TV sets in Iowa, which is why I think Pitt isn't getting a B10 invite and Rutgers, 'Cuse, and UConn will. Sure, there are plenty of Pitt fans in PA, but they're already probably watching Penn State games when Pitt's not on. ISU could be Top 5 in both football and basketball, and we wouldn't get the nod because we don't bring any more TV revenue. Just like if the Big 12 were the progressive conference with it's own network and revenue sharing looking to snap up some more teams, Iowa probably wouldn't be brought in.

More than that...

I would argue that your 99.99% is way high. How high is the question. The Big 10 is an academic conference before everything. Now how much that really matters is up for debate.

Yeah, I knew that was coming. Any chance to tout the hoks and their draft results. Thing about OU is that they have multiple difference makers in the pros, not just a few. You know if iowa would have had four first round draft picks, you'd be shouting it from the rooftops. My point is that OU does just fine with their top classes. Quality vs quantity I guess.

Don't kid yourself cm, I enjoy debating with you, but I'm on the opposite side. I hear waaaay too much about the hoks living in this state and I hope they lose every single game. Just like every year, the hype gets out of control and by the time fall comes around, people are talking about NCs. I can't wait to see that go down the tubes.

Iowa wouldn't be accepted either by those standards . . if they were in the Big XII waiting to "get in" into the Big 10/11/?/$. To wit: ever heard of the CY-HAWK series? Who do you think won this year?

BTW, your "Bitter" accusation is getting old. But then again, your phony self effacing style is always noted and quite humorous.

You're right, they wouldn't. But they don't have to because they're already in. I guess I don't see what anything you said proves.

OMG ISU won the Cy-Hawk series, no way. That has to be the greatest accomplishment in the history of the world.

ok end of sarcasm. Seriously, ISU got to play at home for the most part and the last few years the edge in the Cy-Hawk series has gone to the home team.

Well that is an interesting thought……………….

Here is the problem. You and about 20 or so others take great offense at what I say. You accuse me of being arrogant, using big words to impress etc, etc, etc………The problem is when making accusations of judgment about others, you place yourself in a “positionâ€￾ above them, but ironically most of you don’t get that. I’m sorry you guys are offended by the way I talk, but it’s not contrived. It is who I am.

Most of the rest of the compatriots over here I don’t have much difficulty with so I’d guess that says more about you than it does me. Have heart though I’ll be disappearing shortly, until after football season as I do try to monitor myself.

As for Frak, I do understand your anxt and I too enjoy dialoguing with you. All the same ISU fans get what they give for the most part. It’s a fallacy that they are more even keeled & less offensive than Iowa fans. They are the first to make fun of Iowa fans for projecting a good season and they are out and out disdainful about their success. I’ve been over here a lot and I have to tell you most of the Iowa fans on here are pretty tame. As for me I would never start a thread on here “gloatingâ€￾ about Iowa’s draft (like you said) I will however point out errors in popular thinking and defend Iowa’s attributes. I realize “itâ€￾, and I irritate people, but if you are going to say something silly on a message board be prepared for someone to correct your error in thought.

Lastly Madclone you are a very bitter ISU fan and if its old then quit being “thatâ€￾.

This is the one major difference between most of the Iowa fans I enjoy (admittedly that group gets smaller all the time) is that we typically want ISU to win. Keep in mind though I don’t have hard feelings towards ISU and their successes, like many ISU fans do towards Iowa. Lets be real honest here though, if it were the other way around ISU fans would accuse Iowa of being jealous.

We are all fans and its “ok” to be excited about our seasons, and expect lots of wins. Iowa has had a lot of past successes so really to make fun of them and their “hopes” says more about ISU fans than it does them, doesn’t it?!?!

I only visit Iowa periodically but there are two axioms I live by there 1) Best planked whitefish is at racoon river and 2) Keeler's columns are biased and usually include poor English.
