Walter Nickel

no one disparaged him. They simply stated he passed away and he was going through some stuff with the military. Plus it's public information. Sorry some of you can't handle facts.

I began this thread with simple mourning for the loss of a Cyclone. Then I became aware of him being a military doctor and felt proud of him. As for the rest, I’m assuming that there much more to the story, so I won’t judge him. I know a little bit of the “what” and nothing about the “why.”

if your one of the ones up in arms freaking out over this guys death i expect you to go over to the anne heche thread and throw the same fit.

We should be able to talk openly about substance abuse and mental health issues just as we would any physical injury or ailment.
Fair point…but it’s not the vibe I’m getting from the this thread. I’m getting an, ‘Oh wow, did you hear about what happened to Walter?’ vibe. That seems wrong to me. I’ve seen comments about how the mighty have fallen and so on…that seems disrespectful to me. But hey, it’s the internet and people love watching a train wreck right?

I love your idea though- you should start a thread about mental health and substance abuse issues.

…and how is that anybody’s business? What ‘situation’ is there that people on CF just absolutely need to know?

It’s the old rule: if you hear something good about somebody, tell everyone. If you hear something bad, keep it to yourself.

It's not like it's top secret information, it is posted for the public to see on a government website.

That almost nobody would’ve known about or had the desire/ability to access had the car-crash brigade not raised the issue…

I have no problem with facts and the truth, but to what end? Just to appease nosy people who want to hear dirt on somebody. Makes no sense to me and seems plain rude.

Almost no one pays attention to daily police reports but yet they are public information and someone usually points out when someone is arrested.

It's an unfortunate situation, but it's also a matter of public record.

Look bud, I get it- it’s public record. However, I’m speaking to a larger point. It’s a can vs. should argument: can people post trash about our former players here, absolutely, it’s ‘public record’ and fair game, so they can. SHOULD they- absolutely not. You CAN walk down the street naked…should you, probably not.

The guy is dead and had some unfortunate things go on prior to his death and that sucks. However, I think our own fan base should have a little more respect for our former players than post tabloid trash about them- let other websites do that (the same argument I made about Connor’s silly ‘reporting’ on Mevis awhile back). I think these pages should be a place where we lift up the people that have worn our uniform, not make a spectacle of their misfortune.

No one was talking trash!!! Almost all the posts were shocked that he passed away and were curious what he was up to until his passing, which resulted in finding out about the military issues.

One person speculated suicide, which isn't talking trash.

Must be exhausting to need to police the line of when a deceased person did enough things wrong so that people are allowed to discuss those things after they have passed. Can't have much time for a day job dealing with that, too.

Always awful to see families left behind and I loved watching Nickel play back in the day. The whole story is very sad. And it really does seem like McCarney-era players have died young at an alarmingly high rate.

A couple of things… I have a hard time with the authority you are trying to assert in determining what should and shouldn’t be posted on a message board. Little, if anything, I have seen here has been disrespectful. If you don’t want to partake in the discussions that are happening, don’t click back into the threads that you don’t enjoy.

It seems like you have a problem with the reporting of facts. Connor’s article was reporting facts. Mevis did not kick well. Connor described what that reportedly had looked like. The link posted here was of court marshal proceedings. Neither of these things are remotely close to being tabloids - no body is sensationalizing the events.
