Walter Nickel

Just seems like common courtesy to me: no need to trample on a man’s grave. Maybe it was better to just remember the guy and what he did for our school.
you mean the guy who broke the law multiple times and then killed himself (we think) and left a wife and 5 children all under 16? we trampled his grave?

That's sad. He was a good tight end. My main memory of him is when he was ruled down by touching his wrist on the ground during our bowl game vs pre-Big 12 TCU.
I'm sure that had to be well before the days of "The previous play is under review."

How about, let those who played for our favorite football team, became a doctor, and then chose to serve our country dealing with all the pressures and difficulties that comes with all of that cast the first stone. The rest of us can continue to support each other and handle our own ****.

no one disparaged him. They simply stated he passed away and he was going through some stuff with the military. Plus it's public information. Sorry some of you can't handle facts.

very interesting!

am i reading this right? he only had to serve 7 months?

was he out at the time of his death?

We should be able to talk openly about substance abuse and mental health issues just as we would any physical injury or ailment.
If you feel like what is happening here is an open discussion about the struggles of substance abuse and mental health, then fair enough. It feels a little different then the conversation I have been apart of around these topics, but maybe it’s a new way.

It's been a while, and I'm sure I had a few beers during that game, but I thought they did review it, but I may just be thinking of the TV replays that they showed 25 times.

I had not heard this either. Walter played when I was a student. In fact, I remember I won a heisman with him in NCAA Football on xbox. (4th and inches, goal line formation with play action to the TE was an 80 yd TD every time.)

I had a Poli Sci class with Walter, as well. It was very small so I interacted with him regularly. Seemed like a real nice guy. Though, I would not have expected for him to go on and get his medical license. He didn't seem like someone who was that studious, but maybe that was just because he was in the middle of his playing days.

RIP Walter

And how did we trample on his grave?

Yeah I’d say it’s more an example of how we know very little about the people who entertain us in sports, movies and music. Even the famous athletes who have this very public image, nobody knows the real person except family and friends. Phil Mickelson and his gambling debt is recent example, not that it makes him a horrible person but it goes against his image from years back.

I too had him in a small class where we interacted a fair amount too. Seemed like a nice guy to me too, but so did all the athletes I interacted with when I was there. Enjoyed seeing him on the field. Sad to hear he passed. I know nothing of the other issues everyone is discussing.
