If we did that we'd probably have to change our alma mater to 'somewhere over the rainbow' lol
Problem with that would be volume. When put into a marching band arrangement that would be about 50% of what we want for noise in that kind of situation. I will bring it up though.
That one actually crossed my mind. A good choice, IMO.
And I HATE "popular" country, but this is simply a classic, fun song, that everyone knows.
It's interesting, my own reaction to "Bells." I find it a bit of a snorer right before the game. But after a win it has the potential to be an amazing finish. I'm pretty sure they do play it (correct me if I'm wrong, band members), but 3/4 of the stadium is already gone by then. If everyone stayed and sang it after a victory it'd really have some impact.

Another difference that may make it a snorer during pregame is the band members are really sucking wind by the time they get to Bells in pregame so there isn't as much energy to put into it.
VMBPlayer - Can you make sure that the band is not playing anytime even close to when our offense is in formation. It doesn't happen real often but it shouldn't ever happen. Nothing is more frustrating then watching our guys try to hear the play call in our no-huddle offense or a check down and have the band still finishing up whatever number they were playing. I know it is difficult to end in the middle of a bar gracefully, but I don't really think any of our fans would mind.
If it accidentally happens when the other team is on offense, well, we won't hold it against you...:wink:
And yes, I am "that guy" who is telling everyone in our section to quiet down on the key offensive plays when the guys are trying to communicate. I'm sorry if that pisses anyone off.

I like Cyclone Aerobics, as well, just because it's organized. There is nothing tackier than waving the wheat. Nothing.

To me it actually seems a bit off. Then again for years Ames has been a "low" place for football. Most of our opponents fans would find it a fitting tribute to Ames and Iowa State football in general though. :sad:
I think that musically a bell, especially ones the size we have in the campanile, would be considered one of the boldest of instruments.
Most good song lirics and literature for that matter are not completely literal. That is often what makes them interesting, thought provoking and emotional.
Someone must have considered it a good song, since it won first prize at the 1931 Chicago Alumni Song Contest.
That is a major peeve of the director and is addressed nearly every game. There are those occasional slips because the person directing the band in the stands is a drum major. Which are students who are frequently rookies to that position. This past year we had 2 that were 1st year DM's, and there is a whole ton of things to keep track of from that ladder that can fluster someone without a bunch of experience doing it. I assure you though they do all they can to prevent playing when our O is in formation and they get told when they hear it when they screw up.

Bells is the Alma Mater, a song or hymn about the school. It's not meant to be a pep song. Maybe pregame isn't the most desirable place for it during the game, but hardly anyone sticks around to hear it after the game. I really wish it was taught like the fight song is (kind of), it's a beautiful song. Heck, even my 4yo requests Bells (and knows all the words, booyah) as one of his bedtime songs.

As far as Bells of Iowa State, I love the song - just not at a football game. Sporting events should have music that amps you up and gets you prepared for the game. While Bells of Iowa State gives me fond memories of my time at ISU, it hardly gets me in the mood of yelling at the team to kick some arse. Same with Sweet Caroline. Not only does the song suck, but there's nothing more distracting than singing along to the song about the pedophilia of Caroline Kennedy. I'm not saying steal "Jump Around" from Wisconsin, but at least they have the right idea - they play something that gets the crowd ready to cheer for the team going into the 4th Quarter.

Are most of you aware that just about everyone plays their alma maters (which are almost always slow\emotional pieces like ours) at their pregames? Its a traditional piece. Funny how yall are talking about creating a tradition while tearing down one we do have.
Also, please, no country. We already have enough of the country thinking we all drove our tractors to the stadium (even though a huge number of us never lived in the country- and becoming moreso every year). Lets not play into the stereotype.

So I think we have come to a conclusion that pregame isn't the place for Bells, I would agree. However it is played after every game win or lose, that being said it is the last thing played before the band leaves and everyone is gone by that point. IMO we should move it up to after whatever we come up with as a victory song and the team should stay out and sing it along with everyone else. I know a lot of other schools already do this but idc it shows unity and that your putting the school first and I think speaks volumes of what the team, fans, and supporters feel about the school.
Honestly this song is great for pumping someone up for a game emotionally, but probably not in a stadium setting to get the whole crowd going. Large crowds of people are stupid and want to be told what to do. They hear loud music, they are loud. It's a little slow for intro music. (even though I love this song)
