Victory song?

And I also think that right after Kickoff is week too. The entire crowd...right after the kick needs to scream/yell: CY - CLONES! Right now we all chant the "ohhh" then....nothing. It is boring. This needs to be changed as well.

Examples:

Notre Dame - "Ohhhhh....... I - RISH!" Sounds awesome.

Oklahoma - "Ohhhhhhhh....... U!" Pretty cool.

Why can't we train ourselves to say CY - CLONES! Put it up on the damn video board if it is tough for people at first.

Goooooooooo Dogs- Sick em!

Bad ***.

Am I the only person that hates "Cyclone Aerobics"? It always looks ridiculously tacky. And slightly dangerous to do intoxicated.

I think it looks awesome when you can see the whole student section doing it.

It's tradition. The point of this thread is to invoke tradition so why would we take away something traditional?
Well, yeah, i understand it's not going away. I just don't like it. It's like i know the bells of iowa state aren't going away either, even though it sucks.. you know it blows when people like a song you don't even know the words to better than it.

I thought that might be the case... I LOVE the full version of Throwdown, but I suppose our small cut can get old after a little while.

What we don't play much anymore (ever since the football team called out the band for playing while they were on offense) is our offensive 3rd down cheer. That one is fun.

Agreed. Throwdown full version is a blast to play. Thats the song i chose to conduct for senior night in bball band

And yes... third down on offense was definitely a lot of fun...

I totally agree that Bells sucks. I love Iowa State University passionately, but that song arouses no kind of emotion or feeling in me whatsoever. I try to time my entrance into the stadium to be just after they play Bells.

Im not a huge fan. I'm also not a huge fan of the change from 'whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do' to 'whatcha gonna do I-S-U'. Why are we asking ISU what theyre gonna do?

You think Bells of Iowa State sucks????
SHAME!!

Bells is a beautiful song.

Boooo. I love bells. Both played and sung.

99% sure he's talking about throwdown, which to be fair, IS pretty generic.

Yep, it's this.....plus 50+ other schools use it. Are we gladiators? No, we are Cyclones. Very generic sounding. Play the Wicked Witch of the West music for some originality. Would be cool for the band to learn too.

On a sidenote.... Can we please get the cannon fixed this year? That damn thing misfires and sounds like a cap gun half the time.

lol, good point. Granted, I suppose the same could be said of "Whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do".. but then maybe we're directing it at our opponents? I dunno.

I remember when Jeff Johnson came to rehearsal to talk about changing that and doing some other stuff as well. I think the band was the one's that in the end suggested "Whatcha gonna do, ISU", cause Jeff's lyrics that he wanted just didn't fit very well with the rhythm of the song.

I LOVE the fight song, all three movements, but I HATE Bells. Sorry.

At least it gives me time to chug another beer before I go in for the game.
I could not agree more. Fight song is fantastic. Bells always sounded like it should be played at a lame new years party for a retirement home.

I like The Bells of Iowa State. I enjoy it being the last song after BB games. It isn't a hoot and holler song so I wouldn't want it to start the fourth quarter of a FB game, but I think it is a true ISU classic. It does elicit emotion in many who are life-long Staters.

Thanks, Jim Wilson!

So, this is something the band plays? Not trying to start any arguments here, but I'm having a heck of a time coming up with what song you're thinking of...

Maybe any further description? Granted, hard to describe an instrumental piece... does it start with the drumline alone? Or Is it really short?

Other band people, maybe help me out here?

I think he might actually be talking about warm up #7.

Either way there isn't a set "third down stop cheer" The reason whatever tune you are talking about is selected is likely because of the volume factor. In key defensive situations we try to pick the loudest (everybody playing) cheers we have so it frequently seems we have it set as for a specific situation.

That is why the band seems to play every 3rd and short what I have seen referred to by non band/music types as that 'scale cheer'. It's basically a chord progression. The staff has been looking for something better for those big down plays. I've personally brought it up with the director and he agrees we need something else. The problem is it's surprisingly hard to find something that is really loud, and short enough to fit in between downs. If anyone has any suggestions that fit those two and arrange well into marching band instrumentation I'd be happy to pass them along for consideration.

The benefit of the cheer that I think you're talking about as the 'gladiator' one is that Everyone in the band plays as loud as they can and it can be cut off at the last second.

And yes the noise of the band is more effective than the crowd. Examples:
-I talked to Mike Gundy after the game this year and he made a comment about us.
-We once got Chase Daniel to turn around out of his huddle and glare at the drum major.
-Our own athletic dept. Asked we not play when we're on that half the field during offense (which is the reason horn guy now plays first down most the time)

It's hard to tell from the stands just how loud the marching band is but when you're in front of them on field level it is a factor. Especially since they were moved down in front of Jacobsen.

As for a victory song:
The pep band plays celebration after Hilton wins. What would you guys think of that? Right now we play fights first and the team sings it by the students. That is one of those traditions that has started and I don't see that changing, but then there is a period between Fights and the alma mater (which is a great alma mater) where we could put a 'victory' tune.

Again, play the Wicked Witch Music after a third down stop. Could you please pass that along? It is a great idea.....and original. We are cyclones....and that would be awesome to hear.
