USC Coaching Search - Riley

That is STUPID money but that's LA for you...

Actually hiring Lincoln Riley is a brilliant move. You raise the profile of USC and the Pac 12 with this hire. It is a shot at the SEC that USC and the PAC 12 will respond and not surrender. Exactly the response needed to fight the SEC and ESPN power grab.

USC has plenty of money. They have immediately made themselves a National Championship possibility. Lincoln Riley will sign a fantastic class for USC. Take the money. And screw OU who took the money and sold everyone out. Love It.

The alumni base at USC includes some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the entertainment industry.

they wanted a big time hire. They were willing to pay whatever necessary

Reading thru some of the OU blogs one poster stated that thIs a DB move by LR secretly taking the USC job and pulled the rug from underneath OU. How ironic that OU did that to the Big 12 and that was ok. Karma
The best is OU fans calling Lincoln Riley a liar for leaving OU and joining a new team. Ummm Hey OU fans, your whole university did the exact same thing and left the big 12 for the SEC.
Its this all day long ..... OU fan: "He is chasing dollars!! He lied to us!!" Oh really... tell me about your SEC move again.

The only way this becomes analogous to Nebraska is if OU botches the hire and gets really bad coaching for the next several years.

I know I keep saying this, but Nebraska’s recruiting has not taken a hit until this upcoming class. Nebraska’s strength of schedule is not harder overall than it was or would be in the Big 12.

Everybody repeat after me.

Nebraska sucks because their coach sucks. All the vague reasons people give for blaming the conference move for their struggles would show up in recruiting or SOS. Yet it hasn’t.

Agree. I think what messes people up more is that they lost their strategic advantage when the rules changed and they couldn't stockpile 200 players anymore. So they had TWO shots hurt them, that one, that made them not-special anymore, and the bad coach hires as you spell out.

If Frost figures it out (or they hire a guy who can) they can be just as successful as Iowa or Wisky has been. But they will never get back up on the Osborne pedestal again due to the rules changes.

I think the biggest thing (outside personal/family preferences) is that while situations/rules might change that lower the ceiling on a program, the fanbase takes a while to adjust and often will blame the coach. Pelini was fired for what I would consider hitting the ceiling of modern Nebraska because the fans/administration never adjusted their expectations after losing their larger strategic advantages.

If OU went 9-3 a few years in a row and continued to lose to Alabama/Georgia he'd get the same treatment Pelini got. Better to go to USC now than suffer that and have to take a lesser job afterwards.
