UNC it is.

I can just imagine the howls of protest from people who'd think they have a right be such a momentous occasion. Also, I think this really went beyond him to an extent. In today's interconnected world, it was more than the people who were there in person. If you weren't there, why would/should it personally affect you? No one was forced to watch or listen, and it wasn't our money paying for the event.

It is called tact. A keen sense of what to do or say in order to maintain good relations with others or avoid offense. Today was a textbook example of tactless.

You guys saying he shouldn't have done a public announcement are a joke. Every other big prospect gets one, why shouldn't he? As for using the facilities, who cares. It was part of our recruitment of him and it didn't work. Apparently UNC was able to do it better.

You guys act like we are entitled to him, when we were probably the lowest on his list all along. This board is hilarious.

Then go.

He should have made a private announcement instead of the big dog and pony show in front of all the ISU fans did he honestly think they would be happy for him it was like rubbing our nose in it? I say due to budget cuts ISU should fire his mother if Roy hasn't already got her a job at North Carolina. Hopefully people will boycott his high school game at Hilton or cheer for the Illinois team if they do.

Wow, way to invite the general public. Should have been a Cyclone HB. Will be rooting against you now.....cause I dislike Roy Williams that much.

I dont think most have a problem with the fact that he went to UNC (or at least its not the biggest problem). Its the WAY he did it. Bad move to invite a crowd that would be 90% cyclone fans.
And perhaps they were hoping that the hometown crowd would be supportive no matter his decision. Unless we have a secret glimpse into HB's or his mom's mind, we'll never know.

Does anyone think McDermott knew before today? I didn't watch any of the announcement. Did he seem surprised?

No one is wishing him bodily harm....just losing seasons and lack of success on the court. What is wrong with that?
Wishing that a high school kid loses in college because he didn't choose your school? Nothing wrong I guess, just petty and vindictive for no reason. Now, I hope he loses when he plays the Cyclones, aside from that it really doesn't matter to me.

who wants to go to an ames game in iowa state apparel and boo harrison.

I remember when you were never going to post again. Give the kid a break. Your post today have been horrible towards Harrison and the program. Fire G-Mac because of this? You are Nuts!

While I'm disappointed he didn't come to I-State, it's just one of those things you have to respect. I guess he didn't want the Fred Hoiberg/Mayor treatment from all of us that he would have gotten above and beyond.

Oh well. Move on. The season starts tonight. We're on the verge of a bowl game tomorrow. Things are just fine.

Also, what are people's thoughts on McD on this? He must have a stellar season now...which I think he will.....but not landing HB is huge. He needed that on his resume...and failed. Something tells me that if TF were here or LE....this kid would have been in Cardinal and Gold.

No different than I wish Duke/UNC any other day of the week.

Totally agree - there are several good reasons why I would pick UNC over ISU - the fact that we're not winning and they are college basketball's biggest winners would be reason #1.
But to do it this way - it burns some bridges.

I agree. Although I don't have a big problem with the way he did it either, there are a lot of Harrison Barnes fans and friends in Ames High, and Ames in general, that would have liked to been there regardless of which school he chose. Making it a closed press conference would limit a lot of those people.

I think the correct solution (in hindsight) was to not be so secretive about the decision. Or at least eliminate ISU. If UNC leaked yesterday, the press conference would have had the same affect, just without the gut-punch for the ISU fans.

I guess it's weird for a kid to think that the town that he's lived in for so long would support his decision. Shocking.

As an Ames High grad, I will always wish him well. He seems like a great kid, but I do hope that UNC loses every game for the next decade.

I hope that he goes pro after one season, so I can root for him again.

I will never root for him. I hate Roy Williams, I hate UNC, and I hope he goes to the worst team in the NBA when he leaves college and sits on their bench.

Agreed...I don't begrudge his going to UNC...that's his decision. Doesn't mean I have to like it...that's my decision.

Well, I can't say that I care too much about any player that doesn't choose to attend ISU. Now, I suppose, that some guy that I had never heard of a few days ago will fall into that category. I can say that it is yet again a familar tingle in the gonads to have him pick UNC. If this guy would have grown up in Atlanta like I did... that would have been the last school that he would have picked. As a kid going to school in ISU jackets etc I heard nothing but what a bunch of losers ISU is from UNC fans that were everywhere. Even today 30 some years later my phone is blowing up with my UNC friends telling me that ISU was never in the running and they suck etc.. My father also played basketball at ISU so it struck a nerve and I would not even speak to a recruiter from UNC when I was picking schools. I think that my dislike for UNC was cemented in college when I heard that the hottest chick from my highschool was banged by MJ in not the best of circumstances... My guess is that deep down it will hurt Barnes to not wear the Cyclone uniform; he still has Cyclone blood and is a Cylone in my book. I wish him the best of luck... I hope that he is a first round choice in the NBA, scores 40 in each and every game ... and that UNC loses each one of them!
