I can just imagine the howls of protest from people who'd think they have a right be such a momentous occasion. Also, I think this really went beyond him to an extent. In today's interconnected world, it was more than the people who were there in person. If you weren't there, why would/should it personally affect you? No one was forced to watch or listen, and it wasn't our money paying for the event.
It is called tact. A keen sense of what to do or say in order to maintain good relations with others or avoid offense. Today was a textbook example of tactless.
