Uber

I don't blame people who are too scared to use Uber. I've been using it for a year and I've already been murdered twice.

Only twice?? Can you imagine how many times you would of been murdered if you had been taking a cab for a year!!

Thats cool! So does Uber still pay the driver if they use the code?

Yes UBER till pays the driver what the fare would have been. They simply want you to try it, once you do you'll quickly realize how much nicer it is than using a taxi cab.

I've used it a bunch in KC and it was consistently around 50% of the price of a cab. During the Big 12 tournament, only once did we see surge pricing and it was 1.7. Still cheaper than a cab.

For the Uber drivers, how much of a cut does Uber take?

Hey unrelated.. but coming into town tonight.. Where is a good place to grab some good craft beer(carry out) in WDM on our way to Grimes?

If you are only going to be in WDM the only place I can think of that has Growlers for take out is Granite City or Rock Bottom Brewery. There's plenty of good joints downtown but not too many I'm familiar with in WDM. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I don't know if the Keg Stand does growlers but that would be a good choice if they do.

Just signed up for Uber and I'm checking out some of the spots where I think I may need it in the next few weeks. Love the way the app shows you the locations of cars. Now I have a few questions for our uber experts:

1. I entered my hotel in Chicago for next week and see: uberX, taxi, select, and black car? Is "taxi" a regular cab that is dispatched by Uber? Or just a "regular" vehicle? What do these mean?

2. When I select a place in Des Moines, I only see "uberX" and "uberXL." Does this mean that other types of vehicles are never available? Or just not available right now?

3. I see how to get an estimated fare. If I continue on, am I given a fixed fare? Or do I not know the actual final cost until the trip is over?

1) uberx is personal vehicles
taxis is taxis dispatched by uber
select not sure
black car are like a car service - black lincolns etc

uberx is cheapest and will do in most cases

2) des moines only has uberx and uberxl, xl guarantees seating for up to 6 while uber x only guarantees up to 4

3) you will not get the actual fare till the ride is over, in fact the driver doesnt know either. this is because of traffic delays, last minute route adjustments, etc, its all tracked on gps and you can review the route afterward.

generally estimated fares are pretty accurate though

For those thinking about driving I skipped working Friday night to celebrate the Mayors successful surgery and only worked Saturday night from 9-2:30. After gas and Ubers cut I made $207.89 and did 14 trips. My highest amount was $37.49 while it was surging at 1.5X

What is your average miles per month driven on only your Uber trips?

My furthest trip Saturday was 12.97 miles and my shortest trip was half a mile. I drove a total of 82 miles on Saturday night and completed my first month of driving for them. The first couple weekends I did far more driving around than needed as I was chasing steam as I call it. I drove a total of about 750 miles between the 8 nights that I worked.

What is Uber's cut? Is it a % of your fares?

Just got back from 5 days in Nashville. 2 cab rides and 4 uber rides. Uber was 1/2 the price. 3 of the 4 uber drivers were great, the 4th really liked loud rap music but he drove fine. 1 cab driver was fine the other was obsessed with telling us how much better the BBQ was in Nashville compared to Memphis. My wife has always iffy on using uber but after this trip she is good with using them, it helped that one turned out to be a woman. Her only complaint was that even though it was nice out, it's not a good idea to have the window wide open.
