Tristan Enaruna PT

Are you saying him being carried off the court at Oklahoma was dramatic?

Not even referring to that. But didn't he come back out?

Seemed like about any time he went to the hoop he was in need for stitches until he wasn't.

Gabe is in a shooting slump, he will for sure come out of it. We saw his potential in the Memphis game, it’s off the charts.

Then again, we have 10 other games this year when he didn't hit his shot consistently, as well as the last two years at MN compared to his freshman year there. Too early to draw conclusions at this point but a consistent shot from him would really elevate the team's chances of finishing near the top in the Big XII.

This is an elite defensive team that is inconsistent on offense excluding Brockington. So far, one or two players excluding Brockington have been able to have good shooting nights on occasion. Kalschur reminds me of Matt Thomas who had lots of bad shooting nights but finally figured it out. So far, the defense has been so good that the shooting has not held them back. The real season starts against Baylor and we will find out if this is real when teams have multiple big bodies and Conditt continues to get in foul trouble. Gabe will stay on the court due to his defense not his offense.

5 years from now nobody will remember Grill put up 20 against SEL. These guys stick as a team and Enuranu puts up 6 points pts in 10 minutes during a tournament game and he'll never be forgotten. Hope he keeps his head up and doesn't let playing time bug him. 11-0!

Good post. This team isn't designed to need 3 guys putting up 20 every night. Its designed to need IB to score about that, have any other guy have a hot night and put up 15-20, and everyone else throws in 5-10 each. That hot night- sometimes it's Kunc, sometimes it's Grill, against Memphis it was Gabe. There might even be a night when Bobby Jones throws down 15 (well probably not, but you get the idea). Enarunna will have one of those nights at some point.

Now I'm fantasizing about Jones with 5 dunks and 5 (made) free throws against KU.

Hey, a guy's gotta dream...

Thomas’ shooting improved over the course of his career. Gabe is going the other direction. His shooting percentages this year and last are nearly half where Thomas was his last 2 years.

again, Gabe does so many other things we’ll and we’re clearly a better team with him on the floor. But these shooting woes have been a thing for 2+ seasons and a lot of minutes. It’s more than a slump. Agree with other points here that even a modest improvement would be huge for us offensively.

As previously noted, Gabe starts and gets tons of minutes for his defense. That is the kind of team this is. Could you start Grill instead and get more points? Sure. But I think the defense would suffer more than the offense would gain. Before you start talking plus/minus, keep in mind the TEAM defense concept here on the perimeter. I think he is critical to what they are doing.

The hard part is I don't think he is taking bad shots in general. I get shooting thru the slump, but it's 11 games in and he has had one good shooting game. I wonder if he isn't trying a little too hard, is a little in his own head on offense - you have to be relaxed to shoot well. Maybe instead of trying to shoot thru it, just stop trying at all for a while. Let it come back on it's own instead.

Also, whoever compared him to Nixon that is out of bounds. Nixon's form was bad AND had zero consistency in his stroke. I've seen wrestlers with better shooting technique.

Whoa man, no reason to compare Nixon to wrestlers, that’s an insult to wrestlers

Don't mean to single you out, but I really don't like it anytime the term "bunnies" is used. Have you ever been under the basket trying to score over division 1 athletes who are swarming around? There are very few to almost zero shots I would describe as a "bunny".

Enaruna has struggled to finish under the basket through contact and against length... I agree.

I think part of it (and possibly from Jones too) is the difference between being decisive in your play, and trying to be decisive in your play. Sometimes that latter leads to shots that are too strong.

I watched Tre Jackson pass up a certain layup/jam to get his teammate the bucket. I have watched Eneruna force up a couple of times to get his. I am sharing my opinion just as you are. I am spe ulating on what I see. After all, I am in Montana watching the games on television and not sitting on the bench or witnessing practice.

That could be in large part because one is a 6'0" combo guard and the other is a 6'8" forward.

My summary of this thread so far.

(1) Cyclone fans are complaining about Enaruna and Kalcheur not consistently being effective on the offensive end;
(2) Enaruna and Kalcheur are pulled before the 15 minute mark of each game unless they are feeling it in which case they stay in while they are productive; and
(3) see (2) above, leave this stuff to TJ.

Go back to the Iowa game and Enaruna is on a breakout with Jaz filling the right side just outside the lane. The Iowa defender focuses on Enaruna leaving Jaz wide open. Enaruna forces the ball to the hole and misses the layup. Fran Fraschilla commented and said Enaruna should have passes the ball. A couple of possessions later Grill gives up the ball, I believe it was Jaz, and the Cyclones get an easy bucket. I have watched the "Inside the Eye" episodes and it appears Enaruna is a team guy working hard with his teammates and enjoying the process. Like I said before, the only knowledge that I have to base my comments on is what I see on the court. I totally respect your thoughts on this and they definitely have merit.

Enaruna is quite the puzzle, isn't he? It just feels like he should be better than he is. He has all the physical tools and measurables but just hasn't quite figured it out yet. I hope he does as he seems like a nice enough kid. KU fans are cheering for him to have success in all but 2 of his games this year.

I'm convinced him and Nader are related or something. Guys have nearly identical games, and also seem to have the same boom or bust output in games early in their career. Nader got it figured out and was really good here and I think Enaruna will do the same.
In addition, they really resemble each other.

I just think a forward that is not used to having the ball on the break isn't going to be nearly as aware or have as good of decision-making as a passer as guys like Jackson and Grill that have played a lot of PG and SG in their careers. I'm guessing a guy with the size and talent of Enaruna has probably always been taught that if he's getting to the rim and isn't double-teamed, he needs to be trying to finish.

Enaruna dropping 30 on Kansas in the Big12 tourney confirmed.
