Royce White couldn't stay out of trouble long enough to play at Minnesota. Korie Lucious and Chris Allen were potheads (not an uncommon thing for college kids), Tom Izzo told them to take a hike. Deandre Kane was such a "cancer" to the team at Marshall that he and the program parted ways.
They were not welcome elsewhere. They could not be "reigned in". They were looking for a place to make things right and make an impact, Fred gave them that chance. Each of them were major contributors on teams that took the next step towards returning ISU to the glory of yesteryear.
As fans we should not have to defend our program for giving guys a second (or third) chance. Transfer U should not be a derogatory term associated with "troubled kids" or "misfits" or (my favorite) "thugs". Transfer U should be a label worn as a badge of honor. It should speak to the success on the court and it should speak to the character and leadership ability of our coach. Others gave up, Fred buckled up and provided a place to shine. And all of them did!
Our friends in the eastern part of the state, and others, should be asking Fred for the blueprint. They should be wishing their coach had the sack and the ability to take a kid from the scrap heap, to The Dance. From the role of "cancer", to the role of leader.
BDJ's most recent hiccup included, it is all part of the journey of allowing kids to grow. So when others contort their faces into a nose in the air inquiry of Transfer? I will reply U Bet Your A**.
