Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

Iowa needs a new arena badly. They prob need to the Texas route and build like a 10k gym and pump sound in. It won’t be great but it will be better than what they have now. carver has to go.

Yeah, but the product is just not very good. Even when they were good, the elephant in the room was the product was overrated at best. They are not a good watch and never have been. It is is primarily the heavy reliance on iowa kids (this includes moline) that has rendered it so.

This is supposed to be entertainment after all. If we weren't tied to the state of Iowa we probably wouldn't watch either (this is coming from a guy who watches every iowa game. And I do mean every one)

Fred's current Nebraska team is good example. We can debate how good they are, but I objectively enjoy watching them play. Not because of the Fred connection... I simply enjoy watching them play. They have similar goals to Fran's teams and accomplish many of the same things in many of the same ways, and they similarly won't be mistaken for defensive juggernauts any time soon.

The brutally harsh truth is that Fred primarily relies on undersized guys that are athletic. They are athletic enough to hang while making up for their deficiencies on offense. He did this at ISU, too. Fran isn't stupid, and I know he's hoping his rosters can accomplish the same thing. His players are trying to accomplish the same thing.

They simply can't, and even worse the product is just s***. It just is. It's equally funny and frustrating to hear people debate why fans have checked out. Why they won't show up. The fixation on points scored is the biggest crock of cope in local sports history, and nobody wants to call it out. I've always cringed at "Fran's teams play an exciting brand of ball", even when their fate wasn't so obvious earlier on.

I'll tell you why people don't care, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. Turn on any P6 game. Anyone can clearly see what's different from iowa in about 10 seconds. Sorry, but when you cant defend and cant rebound...100 points scored unathleticly by iowa's rotating cast of dorks in a well-oiled gimmick system is one thing, and it is impressive in its own way. But it has never been EXCITING. Never.
It’s also part of the reason why fans aren’t super engaged at their games. Look at Hilton. What feeds the crowd is a basket followed by a stop. If you just turn around and give up an easy bucket it’s hard to really get the crowd going. Runs feed the crowd and it’s hard to to that when you can’t defend at all.

They aren’t going to do that because of wrestling… there’s no way they maintain two arenas.

For his entire stretch at Iowa, Garza and Cook are the only two higher profile players that Fran has been able to land. That’s pretty pathetic.
Depends on what your definition of high profile is. Is it the recruiting ranking or is it the other teams that Fran beat out?

Because if it's recruiting ranking, there are a few guys who were pretty high profile. Wieskamp and Woody come to mind, but they didn't have a ton of competition for them, if I recall correctly

I mean at this point, they could just play in one of the local high school gyms to save money.

What's the guess at butts in seats for a crap game against two crap teams an hour or two before the Super Bowl? I bet it doesn't crack 3500
Why is the Big 10 constantly playing games all the time? Practically every night there is a Big 10 MBB game. What a weird schedule.

They also do that weird s*** where they play a smattering of conference games really early in the year. For example Illinois played @ Rutgers on December 2.

What’s the over/under on the ‘crowd’?
I am going with 4100 on actual attendance and double G gets the W 85-81. That's Golden Gophers if you are still recovering from pre-Super Bowl events.

Edit: I didn't know the Iowa women are playing on the road right before the men's game. That takes another 900 away. I adjust to 3200 in the arena (which is absolutely pitiful).

So true. Fact is, most of his good players are home grown Hawkeyes or kids who grew up in hawk families dreaming of playing there and a lot of his good players were simply legacy recruits. Sons of both football and basketball players. Fran backed into most of his good players.

Yeah, but we got Doug McDermott and AJ Green!

There’s nothing worse than a Sunday game buried on the B1G network.
