Tired of our last second offense

You can blame that loss on two things - Prohm and ESPN...

Espn has glamorized the last second shot so much, players want to hear their name. I would expect a veteran of Montes experience to know that if he was to drive and dish a sweet dime that his name would be called!!!! Plus whats more important - your name on espn or getting the "W"..... i guess in this case and the game a few weeks ago, its about Monte hearing his name called cuz that was a stupid shot.

And thank you to everyone who is saying this is Prohms problem. Consider this - do you think Self, or Huggins lets that play - play out.... Stupid in every sense of the word.... Plus i believe that Prohm is an excellent coach out of Timeouts.... that should have been an inbound play with 9 to go and we win a tough game on the road!

Very disappointed in our coach and our players not for losing, but, for being stupid..... They should know better by now. Hope this is not a sign of things to come with Prohm....

This is true. However, when given the chance to win at the buzzer, we need better execution....IMO. I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we do not have the depth, mindset or players to play good defense. It's out score them or lose.
Until McKay or Deonte figures out how to play the middle. Wait. They had fouled out. So fouls and lack of depth were again to blame. God we need Carter to be a presence.

Monte hasn't had success at the end since the big xii tourney.

That's actually incorrect, he's had some success at the end of games. With both the Texas game in last year's Big 12 Tournament and the iowa game, the common factor is he drove to the bucket.

With all our offensive players, we can do better at end of the game. One of our major problems is we do not draw fouls very well at the end.

Seriously, why does Morris casually dribble up the floor in a tie game with 9 seconds left and launch a contested 3? Get the **** up the floor and actually get a good shot. Niang barely touched the ball at the end of regulation.

Teams are doing a good job of covering up Niang at the end of games. Just like they are figured out they need to cover Thomas tight all game. When 2 guys on the floor are wildcards, teams only need to defend 3 guys tight in close situations and cheat off the other 2. This staff has to figure out how to get the ball in Niangs hands late in games. He is the closer and everyone on this team needs to remember that.

No, Morris believes he can win every game so he has started jacking threes up. The ball has been in his hands at the end of several games, they know he won't pass. Prohm has drawn plays and not drawn plays but Morris is jacking threes lately all the time. Doubt that's what he wants. Monte hasn't had success at the end since the big xii tourney.

Your evidence of Prohm not being a coach in over his head is that his point guard doesn't listen to him? That's not a real strong argument.

Lay this problem at the Prohm doorstep. No decent out of bounds plays. Trending down defense giving up a hundred in overtime. Slowly improving spotty free throws. Problems rebounding.Losing close games at the end. He just does not seem to have the answers at this point. We will be lucky to win ten in conference. Losing two in Hilton. Not a smashing debut. Looks like he has a lot to learn before he is ready to go. Next year may also be a tossup.

There are a couple different philosophies at the end of games. Some coaches like to go quick against another team and score at the first opportunity. Do not take a time out as it allows the other team to set up its defense. The only stat that matters is points and let the other team try to keep up. Always thought Fred H. was of this mindset.

Another strategy is is to run the clock down and either win it or go to overtime. This strategy does not allow the other team a chance to win with a last second lucky shot. The weakness of course is if the team does not score then the opponent now has 5 minutes to win in overtime. Always thought G. McDermott was of this mindset. Pros and cons with both. In the end it is up to the team to know what the coach expects at the end of the game and to get the job accomplished.

In both cases Monte dribble penetrated. I am ok with him taking the shot, but try to create.

The problem was Burton losing his mind in the last minute not the last second shot. I would take that shot from Monte any time. Trying to drive into the Baylor bigs wasn't going to get him a good look

When Hoiberg let them play the last possession without calling timeout, he was a coaching wizard that trusted his guys. When's Prohm does it, he's a dumb coach in over his head. Given our roster, we're about where we should be. We're going to be a 4-6 seed in the NCAA tourney. Accept it and wait for March. This team can still beat anyone.

look, in nearly every close game our team has not looked prepared on their last possession. That's a coaching issue.

The Hoiberg vs Prohm thing is old but I'll use it in this case...when we came out of a time out with Fred, we knew what we were doing. When we come out of time outs with Prohm, we look lost and confused.

That's either Prohm or the guys on the floor...and I find it hard to believe it's the latter.

Wet floor at the end of the Iowa game allowed the players time to catch their breath and compose themselves for a better final look.

Offense isn't the problem. Our defense sucked. It was on full display in OT.

It was on full display from the opening tip. This team allows more uncontested shots then you see in the NBA All-Star weekend 3-point contest. I get it... this team is challenged when it comes to defending teams with skilled bigs down low because the Clones lack size and for whatever reason McKay plays out of position about 75% of the time. The perimeter D... nothing has changed since last season because they can't cover shooters to save their lives. Baylor had a guy drop a dagger late from the left wing... he got the ball, he got his feet set, he spun the ball in his hands 5 or 6 times to get it lined up just right, he stuck his finger in the air to check the wind conditions, he pulled a comb out of his sock to do his hair and make sure it looked just right for his big moment on ESPN2, he told his teammates a joke about Scott Drew going bald, he made himself a sandwich, he washed it down with some Gatorade, he took a little nap, and then he buried Iowa State with the widest of wide open triples with still no defender in sight. What this team was doing on that side of the court in no way could be described as defense... I'm still not sure what the hell it was. Something similar to this... OLE!!!!!!!!! b1_674945n.jpg

I'm trying hard to like Prohm, but the issues that have already been discussed drives me nuts. It seems as though Georges had an issue on one late game play (UNI) and ever since we've gone away from him. Get him the ball, spread the floor, trust him to make a play. We have a freakin' 2,000 point scorer All-American and we refuse to use him late.

Also, count me in the group that doesn't get the timeouts after made shots. Why give them a chance to draw up their next play? Someone with the time or energy should chart out the next 2 minutes after those type of timeouts. Anecdotally,it seems to me the other team always seems to go on a run.

Tie ball game with 9 seconds and the shot you want is a contested 17 footer from a guy that's played the last 40 minutes without a rest?

I don't have a problem with this. He does it 1) to try to get the guys organized and refocused on defense and 2) to give them a breather without calling a TO on the offensive end and risk disrupting the offensive flow.

Iowa State has 8 losses so far this season. In 5 of those losses the team has scored an average of 87.2 points in those games. How do you average 87.2 points in those 5 games and go 0-5? If they play even mediocre defense they would be 5-0 in those games. The reality is that the game last night never should have come down to a situation with the game tied with 9 seconds to go. They scored freaking 91 points... and no team should ever lose a game when they score 91 points.

You mean like the play that Thomas hit his only three on?

Prohm use the same play that worked against OSU on the last possession against TT. Monte didn't think the angle was there, so he pulled up. It was a horrible shot, but it wasn't the play Prohm drew up. Prohm went back to the play that worked late in the last game. The players didn't execute.
