I too am tired of Monte's cavalier approach to late game situations, but people killing Prohm are conveniently forgetting Hoiberg's first year on the job. I remember talking to my father-in-law (who has gone to 90% of the games in the past couple of decades) questioning Hoiberg's coaching talent as he spent 75% of his time-outs conversing with the assistant coaches. Sure it was his first year coaching (at any level), but he didn't have all the answers in the Big12 either. I don't think the late game situations are a Prohm problem; they are the whole team's problem. Plus Prohm strikes me as a smart guy, he'll learn and improve.
you listed one time it worked. the body of work on his time out plays is ****...so I'm not sure what your point is.
Our offense is 3rd in Kenpom right now. We can talk about all of these situations we want but our issues are defense. This isn't new but now, instead of having mediocre UT, TT and WVU teams to play. We have those teams in great to bubble variations and we get got. Then you have Baylor who is also an exceptional offensive team.
The TO was taken with 2:45 left. Right before that 3, Baylor had an easy dunk on the other end with a guy that had been killing us all game. Additionally that 3 was our first points in almost 3 minutes, not like we were in the middle of putting our foot on their throats. ISU was down 2 and could not afford to be giving up easy points, the TO was for ISU to get their s**t together on defense.
After the timeout ISU got a steal and then scored, the momentum was not shifted by the TO. Baylor didn't make another FG in regulation after the TO, it actually worked out in our favor.
Because that is basically the only time a coach can call a timeout this year. The ball must be dead for a coach to call timeout under the new rules.
Some of the anger on this board for not taking timeout late game is misplaced when directed at Prohm. One of the players on the floor needed to call the timeout late in the game.
At some point because of the new rules our veterans need to play like veterans and value the ball, run good offense and make good decisions.
No it's not. He could call a timeout after the other team makes a basket during a 10-0 run like every other coach in America does.
Just for my curiousity, did you have this same complaint when Hoiberg was here? Because he never called timeouts during other teams runs.
Hoiberg was special when it came to drawing up plays out of timeouts. That's not the norm. And we have had several well-executed plays out of timeouts this season, including one last night. I'm not going to hold it against Prohm because he's not as good at Hoiberg at drawing up set plays.
Blasphamy! No way man! Fred would NEVER, EVER let a team go on a 12-0 run like Baylor did last year in Hilton with out calling a timeout.
No chance. Zero. Zilch.
