Time for a Real Discussion About Caitlin Clark

Comparing this women's college basketball player to Pete Maravich is brutally offensive to the greatness that was Maravich. Find video on YT of Pete and what he could do and it's a walnuts to watermelons comparison, at best.
I don't "dumb" or "laugh" at people's posts anymore - it's childish and I'm ashamed I ever did it.

I don't need to go to YT to learn about Pete Maravich, as I'm old enough to have seen him in person, read articles about him in Sports Illustrated and Sporting News, etc. LSU hired Pete's father, Press, as head coach, then fired him as soon as Pete left Baton Rouge. Press wanted Pete to take 40 shots per game and he did. He scored points in droves and threw ridiculous precision passes, many with an unnecessary degree of difficulty. He was a showman, but LSU had a record of 49-35 during his three years on varsity, never won a conference title and never appeared in the NCAA tournament. That doesn't diminish his greatness - he was the best show in town and was drafted #3 overall in the NBA Draft, where he continued to entertain.

You wouldn't know this because you've not seen it on YT, but Pete wasn't universally beloved in either college or the NBA - lots of the "old guard" didn't feel he "played the game properly".

I've lived in Iowa City since 1998 and I hate EIU as much today as I did when we moved in. My oldest son played club baseball with Kirk Ferentz' youngest son - I know KF and I still want EIU to lose every game. Having established I am not a closet hawk fan, I'm amazed at people like you who can't acknowledge CC's greatness. She is doing similar things on a women's court to what Maravich did on the men's court fifty years ago, shooting frequently from ridiculous spots, scoring bushels of points and throwing outrageously good passes. The only difference is she wins big, which Pete never did, either in college or NBA.

That doesn't mean I like her, condone her petulant behavior or see her as a role model. It just means I acknowledge her transcendent talent and I'm disgusted it's on display for our hated cross-state rivals. Everything else is superfluous - the young lady can hoop and I have no doubt she'll be successful in the WNBA, not that I'll be watching.

His point was that if Brock was a Hawkeye the local media would be Brock Center 24/7, and that some (not all) of the local CC hype is about that reality?

That's my point.
Why aren't they covering George Kittle even as much as they are Brock Purdy? Why aren't they doing stories on CJ Beathard? Micah Hyde? No they would not.

There’s a thread dedicated to CC with 58 pages and counting that has barely left the home page in months. Majority of it dominated by Iowa state fans complaining about the following:

Her complaining on the court
Too much media attention
Comparison to MJ and Tiger (this one is valid)
Her celebrating incorrectly after a game winning shot
Something about Wisconsin’s arena capacity?
Her antics on the court ruining youth athletics
Some really disturbing posts about how much they hate her and how she affects their personal lives

I’m sure I missed some. Do you know why she’s doesn’t bother me? I don’t watch her or consume any content about her because she plays for Iowa. Unless they play Isu I have zero interest or care what they are doing over there.
I've never even seen her play. I'm totally dumfounded why there's a massive thread about her, over here. She's a great local player. She's going to get covered but why even care? Join in or choose to ignore.

I have watched Clark play basketball and she is a tremendous talent. One of the best I’ve ever seen. I love the way she plays on the court. I just don’t care for the way she behaves on the court. Her complaining to the refs with every call that doesn’t go her way, the way she runs to the crowd alone after winning a game, with her hands out as if to say, “Look at me, aren’t I great”. Why doesn’t she include her teammates? Does she think the victory was all her and she doesn’t need a team? Teammates have to hate this about her.
Somewhere along the way her parents and her coaches have let her down. Why did they let this behavior go on. Why wasn’t she taught to respect the game, the refs, her teammates, her opponents? I coached in high school for 40 years (retired now), had children that played sports, this behavior would have been stopped at a young age.
I’m not sure if she will go to the WNBA next year or stay in college. But I don’t think her professional teammates will put up with her complaining, her chicken wing drives, her celebrating a victory without her teammates.
Not sure if opposing teams will treat her like the 1986–1992 Detroit Pistons’ Bad Boys, but that chicken wing drive down the lane of hers will be met with a completely different defense than the college teams she plays against now.

To be fair, there's an entire forum dedicated to instate rivals. If the topic doesn't interest you, you don't have to read it. If you want to stick to solely cyclone sports topics, that's great. That's the primary focus of this site after all. But there seems to be interest in the other instate programs where people want to discuss it here.

So yes, you can join in on the conversation regarding other schools in the state or choose to ignore.

Just want you guys to know how weird it is. :)

OK now I know you're just trolling.

Micah Hyde?

Brock's story is ABSOLUTELY HUGE to sports fans across the country, in part because he's leading the league that has been the most popular league for many decades nationwide.

Tyrese is probably having an equal or better season in terms of he may very well be the 2nd to 5th best basketball player on earth right now, but I recognize that the NBA isn't as widely popular as the NFL. Plus with Tyrese I do get that he only played 1.3 seasons here even though the guy BLEEDS CARDINAL AND GOLD, I mean he named his dog "Ames".

If Brock isn't Iowa State nobody is Iowa State.

Yeah Micah Hyde. The same guy who was in the discussion for NFL defensive POY 2 years ago. I seem to remember Cael Sanderson getting plenty of press too when he was at ISU. I just don't see a Hawkeye bias here sorry.

Do you live in Iowa City? That's the only way I could understand being sheltered from how big a story Brock has been.

I'm a wrestler to the core and followed Cael and to think that Cael's story is the national story that Purdy has been is insane.

Ditto with Hyde.

I see this has now made Message Board Genius, an "X" page dedicated to absurd fan posts. And may I say, it is well deserved.

Some of you people need to get a grip. You are embarrassing us. And by the way, this whole thing is completely and totally sexist. Her "antics" wouldn't even get a second thought in the men's game.

Hey Dumb$ss, all I'm pointing out is that CC doesn't do 1/4 of the $hit on the court that Maravich did. And oh by the way, her "talent" is not "transcendent". Working around moving screens and making shots is not astounding, though she squares up for a shot quite nicely, but alot of players can do that. We also know what happens when someone gets too much in her grill, she either literally shoves them to the floor (as the video is on here already for all to see) OR she FLOPS her way to a foul OR she takes her forearm and sticks it in the chest of the defender to give her room to shoot. She is NOT some in "generational" talent, except to people who are biased Hok fans (who shouldn't be anywhere near this chat anyways).

I sure as hell didn’t go looking for this - it just showed up in my news feed.

I’m out of here - I don’t care for CC, never intended to carry the banner for her and don’t need the abuse. I am not now, nor have I ever been, a hawk fan, but some of you people are embarrassing.

Sooooo...why did you post it there?

But we mocked Marcus Smart for flopping. In fact, flopping was such a big issue in the NBA that they had to draft new rules. Fans don’t like it when nba players complain either. In the Minneapolis market, fans were upset at Karl Anthony Towns for constantly complaining to refs during the playoffs instead of getting back on defense. And it would affect his play.

Yes. These on court antics are more prevalent in the men’s game. It’s so prevalent it has worked its way to the grade school level for boys games.

This is a legitimate discussion point. I don’t like it when any player, men’s or women’s, at any level complain about officiating, deliberately trying to flop to draw a foul, etc. Such actions have overtaken the men’s game…. I just hope it doesn’t overtake the women’s game as well. But since CC is such an integral part of today’s women’s basketball market, I’m afraid the women’s players might go down that road eventually if they try to be like CC.

Thats the overall concern, which I don’t think is embarrassing to discuss
