Throwback Thread: COACHING SEARCH: Wednesday, Nov. 25 evening update

What's funny is when the search opens up all of a sudden people name drop like they know dozens of other head coaches and coordinaters. Do you people sit around and follow the actions of mid-major programs? Or do you just regurgitate what cbs sports has said about guys?

If Fred would have had any kind of coaching experience and not just front office experience I would acknowledge the parallel. Otherwise this is nonsense.

By the way, this was the common train of thought at the time.

Fred is an anomaly & Leipold's situation isn't really comparable.

The same way a DIII coach translates to ISU: it really doesn't. Everything about this is a risk, and it all operates under assumptions and perfect scenarios. Sure, Leipold knows what it feels like to win, a lot, at DIII level. Frost knows what it's like to win, a lot, at a P5 school. Ultimately, they both know how to win, they just got there differently.

Not having HC experience doesn't disqualify them as a potential candidate, just as having HC experience doesn't necessarily mean they won't suck a** as an ISU head coach. It's all completely unpredictable.

I would have rather kept Rhoads than go with Leipold. That would be a HUGE mistake IMO.

What kind of staff could he put together AND what are his recruiting connections? Those are big weaknesses.

If we hire an ex division 3 coach as our next head coach I will lose all faith in the administration at ISU. You cant tell me that Tony Alford (learning right under Urban Meyer) wouldnt be more equipped to run a power 5 division 1 school than an ex division 3 coach.
I'm sure Liepold is a good coach and fine human but put me in the camp that is adamantly opposed. D3 athletics is a step above high school. A very small step, in many cases. I had a friend who barely played in high school and started all four years D3.

We have a problem. We can either hire a HC from a very small program or a HC that runs the wrong (option) type of offense. Maybe Campbell is the exception. I think OC or even DC should be given more emphasis. Or we need to open the pocketbook so we can afford a slam dunk hire like Fuente.

Strongly disagree. I am very pleased with the numerous quality candidates, and there are undoubtedly guys we are unaware of.

Stitt's a head man, I'd bet he wouldn't take a coordinator's job. Just from reading about and listening to him.
Maybe we should open the checkbook a little more for the coordinators and other staff. I'd love to see Stitt as OC, not as excited for him as HC.

IMO niamatolo would be a great hire. He is proven he can get it done. He would bring a style of offense not run in our conference and it creates a niche that would be unique to ISU. I'm sure he could also bring competent assistants. I also like Willie Fritz. Both of these guys seem like good fits for our university. I really don't want to go the route of hiring a coordinator. I think the next head coaches success will depend mainly on who he can get for oc and DC.

There is a thing called the internet. It's pretty easy to follow all levels of college football.

We will hire a Head Coach. NO Coordinators. It will be a head coach. Count on it. I really don't think we go after the Navy Coach. Just don't see it. I see Pollard.......and Leath.....making a push for Matt Campbell. Campbell was the one of the youngest coordinators ever in FBS. And was named an FBS head coach in 2011. And he is only 35 years old.

Hiring Campbell would give some excitement to the fan base. The guy is a winner. Period. He understands the importance of "culture". He is young and is a great recruiter. IMO, this is a home run hire.

All three of these statements are true.

I don't know if it will be Campbell or not. But it is pretty clear at this point, everything is pointing toward candidates who have managed all aspects of their school's program as a head coach elsewhere. This is a critical difference between this search and others we've conducted previously.

I actually think this is our guy. Pollard's comments about the "culture" at Iowa State. This guy has the resume and would be a splash hire. Plus he wants to build something. We have a great nucleus of young talent. IMO, a great fit.

Wasn't too excited about Campbell but reading about his background shows that he gets it coming from smaller schools. Also I think it shows how important it is to get a HC that has already an established staff.

Just did a search on Fritz and the more I read about him the more I like that hire. He's not splashy name but the guy is a proven winner at every level he has been at so far. At every stop he's been at, he has turned teams around that have been terrible and completely turned the programs around. Out of all the names that have surfaced, I would take this guy over all of em.

What? Most would not even know who he is, and will only hear he was the coach of the MAC program Toledo, a team in which their only impression is of their keystone cop performance.

He is far from a home run. He is more of swinging for a single.

Based on the standards outlined by the "fanatics", he appears to be the only one that fits the bill...who would a home run?

Campbell or Fritz I'm ok I guess with either. I'm more Fritz for his Juco connections. I'm ok with Campbell so long as he doesn't abandon our Juco market. If he does his tenure will be a short term failure IMO.

Agree. It will be a head coach. Just like we hired a head coach for our basketball team. No assistants.

Fritz does not even have any Juco's in Georgia Southern's current class. Neither does Campbell. IMO, Juco's are used to fill in for positions of immediate need. Maybe they do not need the Juco's. IDK.

At any rate, the present class for Toledo ranks #62. And Georgia Southern is #75. And ISU is ranked # 80 at this time.

Last year the rankings were Toledo #69....Iowa State #71......and Georgia Southern #93. And Georgia Southern did not sign any Juco recruits.

So it looks like Campbell is able to at least recruit as good or better than us to a MAC school. I would not necessarily worry.

Fritz might not have any JUCOs in his classes, but it would still be nice to have a guy that coached and probably still have a ton of connects to JUCOs. I believed he played juco in Kansas and coached JUCOs in Missouri. I bet if he needed to recruit, he would dip into the JUCO ranks.

Man I hope we don't go the Navy or Georgia Southern route. I am so tired of the hype for the triple option. That will be a disaster for us. We are so well positioned with our receivers to be able to finally with a good innovative coach to have a passing game that will be exciting and win games. We waste all that talent with either of these hires. Here is the bottom line with the option offense. You won't have 2 or 3 win seasons, but you also will be stuck forever in the low tier bowl game world. Then when the fan base gets impatient looking for more and you hire a coach who isn't a run run run get ready for 0-12 when your talent doesn't fit. If we go this route I will be so disappointed in Jamie.

Willie Fritz has run different styles in different places. Georgia Southern already had the pieces in place to run the triple option (even though it's not a "service academy" true triple option). At SHS he ran a power run scheme...he adapts to what talent he has, that is what we should be looking for.

I am less concerned with our future head coaches system. It all comes back to a coach who can create the right culture. There needs to be stability in the roster. There needs to be a staff that can build up players. Fans will support a winner, doesn't matter if he runs the option or spread.

There is a sollid list of names and I expect the hiring to play out similar to Prohm's. Our future HC is probably a name we've heard, but the name is a bit in the backgroun. IMO most names promoted in the media are the result of agents pushing their guy.
