Throwback Thread: COACHING SEARCH: Wednesday, Nov. 25 evening update

If you hire a option centered coach, doesn't it increase the likelihood that, before he ever coaches his first game, Alan Lazard transfers someplace where he will be able to showcase his skills. I can't imagine that kind of PR hit for the program. It puts the new guy behind the 8 ball right away, if it were to happen.
Paul Johnson has produced some Thomas guy and some Johnson guy you may have heard of who play on Sundays...

Man I hope we don't go the Navy or Georgia Southern route. I am so tired of the hype for the triple option. That will be a disaster for us. We are so well positioned with our receivers to be able to finally with a good innovative coach to have a passing game that will be exciting and win games. We waste all that talent with either of these hires. Here is the bottom line with the option offense. You won't have 2 or 3 win seasons, but you also will be stuck forever in the low tier bowl game world. Then when the fan base gets impatient looking for more and you hire a coach who isn't a run run run get ready for 0-12 when your talent doesn't fit. If we go this route I will be so disappointed in Jamie.

Just when I thought our WR group couldn't be more overrated by CF. Thanks for upping the bar.

Our WR group is okay, good by our standards, but they are not at the level they help determine the selection of a HC. Besides, several of them would be better suited for a "complimentarily" passing game anyways. The thing about good head coaches is they are able to utilize the talents of their players. I don't see this group being wasted by a guy like Fritz at all.

No. Next?

If we hire an ex division 3 coach as our next head coach I will lose all faith in the administration at ISU. You cant tell me that Tony Alford (learning right under Urban Meyer) wouldnt be more equipped to run a power 5 division 1 school than an ex division 3 coach.

I actually think this is our guy. Pollard's comments about the "culture" at Iowa State. This guy has the resume and would be a splash hire. Plus he wants to build something. We have a great nucleus of young talent. IMO, a great fit.

But the fall of 1998 was tough for Campbell. His parents were getting divorced. Pitt went 2-9 and Campbell could see why.
"Off-the-field issues, commitment level," he said. "I never want any kid here to touch or feel what I felt like during that time. The love for football never wavered. I just learned how important great culture is to football. I learned that at 18, 19 years old, as I sat there and saw, why is this not working? Why is this not successful?"

He would probably have experience being a coordinator as well as running a program.

Campbell came into a good situation I believe. Just surprised no mention of Todd Monken.

Instead of hiring Mangino, we should have hired Stitt to run the offense. CPR might still have a job.

Stitt's a head man, I'd bet he wouldn't take a coordinator's job. Just from reading about and listening to him.

This is like saying that whoever the next ISU coach is produced Allen Lazard. Chan Gailey recruited both of those guys and they played for him before paul Johnson came in.

On the Leipold thing, has anyone mentioned Fred went from no coaching experience to the NBA in 6 years? Winners are winners and I would not be against this hire if Jamie thinks he is a good candidate.

If Liepold had been in an NFL front office for years I would acknowledge the parallel. Otherwise, this is nonsense.

If Fred would have had any kind of coaching experience and not just front office experience I would acknowledge the parallel. Otherwise this is nonsense.

By the way, this was the common train of thought at the time.

The only thing I've learned in this thread of that a lot of people seem to think their opinions about possible football coaches matter. Lots of good laughs in this thread.

Given our history, I don't think it matters who you hand the keys to. They all have an equal chance at success here. I just want a new regime.

Paul Johnson sits in fertile recruiting turf, plays in an ACC division opposite FSU and Clemson. They are dreadful when they get behind and can't pass.

ISU is best off mirroring a KSU power shotgun spread like they did after the Fat Man was fired, not mirroring a bleeping service academy offense.

People need to quit acting like Georgia Tech gets the same type of players as an LSU or Auburn. Where they finished on rivals recruiting rankings:
2015: #39
2014: #47
2013: #85
2012: #57

As compared to ISU
2015: #69
2014: #56
2013: #58
2012: #88

Can they get better players than us? Yes, but its not as wide of a gap as some of you may think, and I'm betting a guy like Ken N would have higher rated classes than Rhoads did

We have a problem. We can either hire a HC from a very small program or a HC that runs the wrong (option) type of offense. Maybe Campbell is the exception. I think OC or even DC should be given more emphasis. Or we need to open the pocketbook so we can afford a slam dunk hire like Fuente.

Good thing they transfered, otherwise they wouldn't have made the NFL in such an offense, right?

Way to miss the point.
