Throwback Thread: COACHING SEARCH: Wednesday, Nov. 25 evening update

My only question is, why didn't someone bigger than Buffalo pull out him out of Wisconsin then?

Why didn't someone bigger than Central Michigan pull Brian Kelly out of Grand Valley State? Most schools egos are to big to hire a guy from lower level.

Art Briles was a HS coach for TWENTY years before going to college. He's now an elite coach. Give me the guy who knows what its like to WIN!

Like you said, Kelly BUILT Grand Valley St. The biggest concern is Leipold didn't build anything, but rather inherited a great situation. It boggles my mind you can't understand that.

I'm not completely against such a hire, but that represents real risk and makes vetting needed. I don't trust JP being able to do that on the football side with such a hire. If we had a AD like Alaverz, sure.

Haven't we already established that Leath will play a big role in the hiring process. I'm not so sure that he shouldn't be the one you ***** about in this case.

So how about hiring Tom Wilson from Dowling? Wouldn't you agree that's ridiculous? That's almost how I feel about Leipold.

Yes, you don't have to be a subscriber to see the first two words of the thread. Missouri Defensive...

I never click on those links when I know I'm going to get the "premium content" message. I just couldn't see us going after another deep south DC the backlash would be insane (not that there wouldn't be fan backlash with Odom but at least he's at Mizzou and from OK).

So looking at JP's history, I think there are 3 things to bank on:

1) he will get it done quick
>someone posted the average time was like 8 days or something
2) he will hire someone the fanbase will approve of - to make himself look good with the hire
>McDermott, Chizek, Fred - these were all 99% considered to be great hires at the time
3) he will hire someone that won't bring controversy to ISU
>people are getting wound up about "clean cut" and "Christian", but I think that's a red herring. I think what JP actually wants is someone who is likeable, approachable, and generally not a sphincter (ie not Briles, Pellini, Petrino, etc)

You may note that none of these 3 things say "most likely to succeed". That said, #2 should be a proxy for that, although fans can be dumb.

I don't know enough about any of these candidates to know which ones fit #3.

So if you want to predict who it will be, look for #2 and #3 and there's your answer.

Except Brian Kelly steadily improved CMU for 3 years (4-7,6-5,9-4) before moving on to Cincinnati. I made a bad argument against Leipold and rightly got mocked for it, but I'd rather have someone that's proven themselves at the FCS/FBS level. Leipold hasn't done that.

So we might be getting Leipold a year or two earlier than we'd like, so what? That probably is the only way we get him over a bigger school to begin with.

Any coach we hire is going to be a risk....any coach. We aren't hiring a top 20 coach, so they're all risks after that. Might as well go get a guy that could pay off big as he's not only won before, but won BIG, and won CONSISTENTLY.

I can't believe how many people are against the Leipold hire. It absolutely boggles my mind.

I don't care what level he coached at, you win 6 titles in 8 years you are a DAMN good football coach.

I look at Brian Kelly. He's the exact same as Leipold. Coached at Grand Valley State (D2) for 13 years. He built a program, and won. He knew what it was like to be the leader of a program and most importantly knew what it was like to WIN! He had ZERO D1 experience but has that stopped him from being a top level coach in college football? No.

Leipold and Fritz are the best options on this list IMO. Followed by Campbell and Navy's coach

Brian Kelly went to the MAC and took scalps at CMU.

Leipold is 5-6.

This would be a laughingstock hire the likes of which we've never seen. I mean, he MIGHT work, but this is a total gamble when there are proven commodities who are interested.

The Navy HC would be an absolute disaster if he runs the same offense at ISU. It would take him 2 to 3 years to get the personnel to run that one dimensional offense at ISU.

Stitt is P5 OC material, not HC.

Leipold has not uplifted Buffalo enough in his one season to warrant a P5 HC gig.

Alford has 2 strikes. No prior HC experience and an affiliation with a former ISU HC that was fired.

Campbell and Fritz should be the top 2 guys by far mentioned in CW's latest update.

I get that, but those are extremely rare cases. I would feel much better if we went the way of a young up-and-comer that has a few years of head coaching experience.

Which is why we should be looking at Kevin Kelly Hs coach Arkansas. I know crazy...but that guy is def outside of any box.

My 7th grade coach was undefeated. Let's call him up!

Why do you say this? Navy coach would be #1 on my list. We already have a power run qb who can throw. Thats the main hurdle.

He won 6 titles in 8 years. THey'd won zero before that. He did something right I'd say.

Why don't you go check Grand Valley States record before Kelly took over before you say he built something and Leipold didn't? 11-1 and 10-2 before the Head Coach left to become the OC at Notre Dame. So the program was built before him, but that doesn't make what he did over the next 13 years any less impressive.

All are risks, but that doesnt mean you still dont try to minimize it.

There are varying degrees of risks. I have my doubts JP and Co are able to correctly access that risk in regards to Leipold.

For what its worth there was a lear jet that flew from Ames to East Lansing. Yes flight tracking is on point.

I'm really selling my soul for being like this, but honestly, I don't care if ISU hires a total d***head. As long as that d***head wins a large amount of football games, let him run his course. Once the program is heightened, then maybe look into someone who is more "likable".

Oh joy, career long runningbacks coach Alford is in the mix. Out of CW's list, this would probably be the worst hire and is the only one CW named that would 100% lead me to not renew tickets or donate. Sure doesn't seem like Pollard wants to throw any money around at this hire. Just going to get someone on the cheap and call it a day...
