Throwback Thread: COACHING SEARCH: Wednesday, Nov. 25 evening update

For all the posters saying "If Pollard doesn't interview or hire so and so I'm done with my support", nobody really gives a **** what you think. Go be a Hawk fan. Seriously.

I'd almost rather not think about who I want or who is possible till the hire. Less potential for disappointment or prejudice towards the new coach.

Art Briles - Spent 3 years as RB coach at Texas Tech before being hired by Houston
Gus Malzahn - Spent 6 years as OC of Arkansas, Tulsa, and Auburn before being hired by Arkansas State
Jim Tressel - Spent 5 years as a position coach at Ohio State and Syracuse before being hired by Youngstown State

None of these coaches went from High School/Division II/Division III to a Power 5 school in 2 years.

My early frontrunner among coaches most commonly mentioned in these updates: Willie Fritz, although several others appear to have potential, too, for various reasons.

I’ve mentioned several times, I’m in favor of head-coaching experience with a lot of winning, someone who has gradually climbed the ranks, success at each level. There’s more involved than that, but I like a lot of aspects (overall) about this summary, for ISU’s situation.
I'm fully on the Fritz bandwagon, for these same reasons.

And no one gives a **** what you think either. Go be a Hawk fan for being a ******.

Oh joy, career long runningbacks coach Alford is in the mix. Out of CW's list, this would probably be the worst hire and is the only one CW named that would 100% lead me to not renew tickets or donate. Sure doesn't seem like Pollard wants to throw any money around at this hire. Just going to get someone on the cheap and call it a day...

There are definitely some concerns but he is known as a stellar recruiter. We don't need him to X and O at all. By all accounts players and alumni love him. He has made loads of connections at great programs which could help him create a good staff. There are certainly some things that suggest he could cover all the important areas of head coaching. Recruiting is the major major plus here though.

That's basically your argument with the whole it worked for Kelly. And that is being generous, as Kelly didn't make the leap from D3 to P5 without first spending 3 years in the MAC and then experience at Cincy.

We are Cincy, not Notre Dame. You realize that correct? So we would essentially be hiring the guy a couple years earlier than Cincy did.

Is it a risk? Sure, but not one person on that list is a sure thing. If I'm taking the risk, I'm taking it on the guy who has run a program and won while doing it.

Would we be the laughingstock if we made this hire? Well, we've won 8 games in 3 years. Our program is one of the worst in CFB history. We already are a laughingstock. If Pollard and Leath feel this guy is the best guy, let the outsiders laugh.....because they already are!

I think a lot of you guys underestimate what a really good football coach can do. I can promise you that there are HS, D3, D2, and JUCO head coaches out there that are better head coaches than some of the guys coaching P5 football. They've just had different paths in their life/coaching profession.

What, all maybe two posters in this thread that have said stuff like that?

Whoopty doo. Losing focus from the topic, here.

If Liepold is even interviewed Pollard should be fired immediately.

Ridiculous. Here's a guy who has won at a lower level, so you know that he isn't going to be learning on the job as a head coach. He's also been an assistant at P5 schools. Plus he is a Midwest guy. Yeah he isn't tearing it up at Buffalo, but it's just his first year and they were pretty bad last year. There is no reason to compare him to Turner Gill. That is beyond stupid.

Id much rather have this guy than Campbell or Frost. What exactly has Frost done to deserve a P5 job?

I can't believe nobody has made a poll yet. I'd be interested to see who the masses are leaning towards.

I agree. Of the candidates we've heard he would be my top guy. Leipold #2. Followed by Campbell and Navy's coach.

We shouldn't be looking at anyone who has never been a head coach.
Good thing for Mississippi State they didn't think that way. Or Temple...

what does Leipold have, resume speaking, that Fritz doesn't? I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

Helped orchestrate ridiculously good offenses that just so happened to win a bunch of football games... Namely in a P5 conference...

You are skipping the part where Kelly had success at Central Michigan before going to Notre Dame. Leipold has one year of not even .500 football at Buffalo.

You are way off base here.

Except Frost has only been the OC since Kelly left. He is using Heilfirch's playbook. Hell, I dont even know if he is calling the plays on the side lines.

You really need to work on your analytical skills.

We are not OSU.
Malzahn was a coordinator for two SEC programs, including Auburn, prior o being HC.
Briles turned Houston around, plus is in Texas for ****s sake.

Come in, you can do better.
Why do you do this? Just make your point (s)...........don't be so abrasive.

For the 3rd time. I'm not comparing us to Notre Dame. We are Cincinnati in this scenario.

I'm only off base if you don't understand what I said.
