This team deserves more....

I'm not taking anything away from you. However, you are in a disappointingly small minority of fans who support the team despite its win/loss record.
I would add that most people on a cyclone message board support the team regardless of win/loss record. Some may complain more, but will still support the team.

I was talking about the lack of student support with a couple of friends last night. Until I graduated last year, I was one of them that was there lined up to get in every chance I could and trying to get down low so I could cheer on our team (or heckle the other team). My wife and I don't have the finances to be big donors right now, so we had to go with the $99 seats in the corners. It's been a rough year of wanting to jump up and start screaming whenever we get a big stop or basket, but looking like an idiot all by myself in the balcony. However, at least in my section I have seen most of the people around me coming game after game. I was shocked when I looked over at the balcony student section and saw about 2 students total (probably the guy and his buddy that was posting on here). The rest was filled with older people, including about 1/3 KU fans. To think that our students wouldn't be showing up to a Saturday game against the top team in the conference made me sick. If they aren't going to show up even enough to fill a couple rows of the balcony, I think they should sell tickets to the top 12 rows of the ends for like 5-10 bucks a piece for the rest of the games and get them filled up with people that actually want to come watch. At least this way we'd have fans there and would make some extra money for the Athletic Department in the process. As hard as it was to get good seats when I was a student and when my parents went back to school in the early 90's, I never thought I'd see the day where none of the students cared enough to claim tickets they'd already paid for to watch Kansas come into Hilton.

dismal indeed...

My theory is that the new students coming in to the university are not as well informed of how things used to be, and the ones buying tickets in the balcony probably just have a mild curiosity of cyclone basketball. They must not know how much of a big deal that is. With that said, the fans that want to be there, the die-hards (myself included) sign up for CA, get down low and stay down low to have the greatest impact on the game and the environment.

Taking Prone2Clones numbers shows the following attendance pattern

JO 13,363
TF 11,920
LE 11,380
WM 11,472

I think some of the decrease was due to higher ticket prices that started in the TF-LE era. That has me a little concerned about the new FB ticket pricing.

i agree cycy. we will just have to give it a couple years. ticket sales for basketball will be going back up here in the next couple years when GMac gives fans a reason to be pumped (i.e. consectutive tourney births).

same thing will happen with football...after 2-3 years GC will have the potential obvious and sales will increase again. we may just have to get by on lower season sales for a few years. its not like we are used to selling 30,000 a year, we can get by a couple more years without being that high.

Guys and gals, I think you need to realize how lucky we are with what we have. I checked, just for fun, the day before the game and you couldn't get 2 tickets next to one another......basically a sellout and I think there were maybe a few season ticket holders at UNI for the duals. So a few students don't show up, big deal. IT WAS ELECTRIC IN THERE SATURDAY!...and in a LOSING effort! (Just imagine next year, maybe a little national pub?) No team can ask much more from a fanbase. And GMac in the radio postgame said that he couldn't imagine a better crowd in the Big XII. Be thankful for what we have and NEVER be ashamed of our incredible and intelligent crowd. And students.....TAKE A FRIEND!!!!

There might be some fair weather football fans, I'd agree with that. The majority of the fans (atleast 90 %) are as loyal as you will find. This community is a good example of the quality of fans we have.

Apparently we boo too much though. :)

Some fan's need to stay home !

I do not understand how some fans go to games and do not get up and cheer the Clones on ! I could not make it to yesterdays game yesterday as I was attending a funeral, but my wife and kids were there. In this day and age everybody stands throughout the game, my wife was explaining to me that the guy behind my son told him to sit down when the game was on the line with a minute to go. It is good thing I was not there, as I would have told him a thing or two. Why do fans that do not enjoy standing or do not get into the game bother coming to the game, when they could stay home and watch it on tv. I know some of you are going to say that they have paid for there ticket, well so have I, and if I want to stand and yell my team on, I am going to do it!

That is my opinion, I am curious to what others think.

Oh, and I noticed too....whether it's for better or worse: GMac's gameplan of slowing the game down really has changed the complexity of the crowd too. Anyone else feel like that? In the Morgan era, at times it could be steal-dunk, steal-dunk, steal-behind the back pass-slam......and we would go crazy. This team is undoubtedly different (more discipined for sure) so the crowd need to recoginize the highs and lows in there are going to be a little different. Either way, we have such a great crowd.

Cyfreddy, I agree. It's loud in there...LOUD.....but some are more into it than others. I suppose it may always be a little like that. Just as long as you're respectful, it's not a church service so get up and show some emotion. But I think that'll come with winning. Not trying to be satisfied about the situation, or complacent?, but we have it pretty good.

I think this makes a good case for a standing encouraged section. I might want to sit too if I was 70 years old or something. We can have senior sections for those people. Thankfully no one asked me to sit down in the student section of the balcony.

I think these numbers show the attendance has been going down with the steady decline of the basketball program. I beleive it will take some time for those fans that may not be "Cyclone Fanatical" to see what we already see. Give it some time and we'll be up to "Here's Johny" status.

I believe!!!

Bottom line, no matter how bad it looked for those of you at the game, it was never metioned or seen on ESPN. A big plus! (The blue hairs down front do need to get some walkers so they can stand instead of looking like they are waiting for their prune juice and pudding in a nursing home.)

Almost a thousand empty seats yesterday and several of the full seats in the balcony were KU fans. If we don't get sellouts on a Saturday against the #6 team in the nation while we are undefeated, can we really call ourselves that great of fans? Sure the fans that are there are great, but with the hustle and heart this team has, they deserve more.

I agree. Give it time. I liken it to a WM hangover.

I blame it on the weather. I made it to the game, but barely, as my truck had a VERY tough time making it just across town to Hilton. I'm guessing alot of the people missing were older or had younger kids, so they didn't want to risk driving in the snow. I would guess at least 1000 people who bought tickets didn't go because of the weather, and I can understand that.

I, however, was given 2 student tickets by my roomates who decided the game didn't matter enough to attend. So I stood in the 3rd row of Cyclone Alley and screamed my throat out, even though I just got my wisdom teeth out and im recovering from strep throat. I still have no voice, but I had the time of my life. If anyone saw, I was the one with the sign reading "Blame it on your SELF" and "Beware the Flurry of the Jiri".

I agree, it must be no-shows and probably the weather. Although down here in DSM it wasn't that bad. Don't know what Ames or north had to deal with.

I tried to get tix on Thursday for the game and all I could get for two together were row 17 in the corner. But obviously there were plenty sold.

KU is always a tough ticket. Given they were #6 and we were 2-0 with some nice wins against Mizzou and NU, I'd say it had to be travel issues.

I was most upset with our crowd in overtime. There was 20 seconds left and we were down 3. KU was shooting free throws. Now in my mind, I'm thinking 'ok we're down three in overtime against the 6th best team in the country.....if I go crazy and everyone else does in Hilton, MAYBE he'll miss and can tie it up..' well..besides cyclone alley, no one was standing.....i was digusted at this point...the place wasn't very loud. Just because the odds were against us, doesn't mean hilton magic is dead. Maybe if all of Hilton was going crazy, it would have rattled them. Who knows. I was very upset with our crowd in overtime.

This is EXACTLY what I thought! I was thinking ok, we're going to go nuts like in the game against Texas in 04 and maybe he'll miss, but instead I look over to each side and nobody was even standing, let alone making noise.
I have to say however this is the only complaint I have about our crowd on Saturday. I was in Cyclone Alley and it was nuts and the entire crowd was very loud the entire day. I expect to see more of this the rest of the season.

We (Cyclone Alley) tried our best to keep the whole place rockin'...we just need to get the rest of the place standing up, and if they don't want to, we might need to stretch the student section around the courtside...ive never seen so many people who will only stand up if the fight song is played.
