Almost a thousand empty seats yesterday and several of the full seats in the balcony were KU fans. If we don't get sellouts on a Saturday against the #6 team in the nation while we are undefeated, can we really call ourselves that great of fans? Sure the fans that are there are great, but with the hustle and heart this team has, they deserve more.

There were many empty seats in the upper deck, I will second that.
KU Fans found some of the open areas and just stood and spread out which kind of masked it.
The students in the lower level were very loud, but I was surprised to see that there were really not many students at all in the upper deck.

I was most upset with our crowd in overtime. There was 20 seconds left and we were down 3. KU was shooting free throws. Now in my mind, I'm thinking 'ok we're down three in overtime against the 6th best team in the country.....if I go crazy and everyone else does in Hilton, MAYBE he'll miss and can tie it up..' well..besides cyclone alley, no one was standing.....i was digusted at this point...the place wasn't very loud. Just because the odds were against us, doesn't mean hilton magic is dead. Maybe if all of Hilton was going crazy, it would have rattled them. Who knows. I was very upset with our crowd in overtime.
I too was a little disappointed with the numbers there. I wasn't disappointed with the heart of fans that were there though.

I agree with you guys, to be honest, the crowd was a total let down. The number of empty seats in the balcony was embarassing. I think a lot of the empty seats were the students in the ends. I think all of the student tickets were sold out, but if they aren't going to show up on a Saturday for Kansas, when will they show up? I hate to say it, but maybe the student section shouldn't be so big.

There is nothing in Cyclone athletics that fans like to talk up more than Hilton Magic, but if people aren't going to show up to games and back it up, I am not sure we deserve to say that. The atmosphere was good for this game, but with the team we were playing and the fight the Clones put up, the team does deserve better. Though I suppose I'm preaching to the choir here. Maybe some letters to the Daily would be a good start...

Official paid attendance yesterday was 13226. I'd say 3-400 at least were ku fans. The intensity of the those at Hilton is unmatched, but another 1300 Cyclone fans would help out a lot.
I wasn't in the area, but the announcers noted the bad weather several times. Is it possible this diminished the size of the crowd?
Aero, I too was very disappointed by the number of people bolting for the exits when the game was still very much in doubt, both at the end of regulation and in overtime. How are we supposed to reach that next level in athletics if a given percentage of our fanbase is more concerned with beating the traffic to get home than staying to the end to support your team? Sure, we lost, but it was a hell of an effort against the #6 team in the country. We can at least stay and applaud our team for the effort they put forth. I don't like moral victories, either, but these young men deserve our greatest support.
i watched the game on tv and the announcers seemed to be pretty impressed on a few occasions with our crowd. at one point one of them said something to the effect that everyone who is a fan of basketball should experience this kind of atmosphere. not exact quote but close. my hats off to those of you who were there.
well the espn announcers were saying close to the same thing in the iowa MSU game, and carver was probably only 2/3's full if not less
We have never had a terribly strong fanbase. In one thread we have people complaining that we can't get to the next level, and in the next they're complaining that season ticket prices were raised to pay for a new coach and facilities. In one thread we're talking about how good our basketball coach has done and in this one, we're reminded that we STILL can't sell out our home basketball court to play the #6 team in the nation.

I was up in the student section of the balcony and was rather dissapointed as well. I found the one other guy there that wanted to stand and we stood the whole game, but we were the only ones. Much of the rest of the section was quieter than the old people, and it was the only section in Hilton that wasn't virtually full. Grrr. I remember going to the Kansas game two years ago and being 5 rows from the top in that section, it being full, and standing virtually the whole game, along with everyone else. As far as the weather goes, that should not have impacted student attendance that much.
I was pretty diappointed with the students as well. The lower levels really didn't fill all they way up until gametime either. I remember having to wait in the freezing cold outside Hilton at 7am in the morning for a 1pm game just for a chance to grab a lower level seat and even then I still didn't get one (thanks in part to the Hilton staff messing things up after they let us into Hilton early but letting the late arrivers be able to cut in line.)

Yep, it sucks. I think Hilton Magic deserves more. The attendance numbers over the last 20-some years are really interesting to look at. Packing the place for every game has happened before and it needs to happen again if Hilton Magic is going to be as "magical" as it can be. What in the hell was our problem from '99 to '01 when we didn't lose at home and won back-to-back conference titles? Good thing we had some good players because the fan support wasn't too good.

If your purchasing of season tickets relies mostly on the team's record, then you are fairweather.
Iowa State's all time football winning percentage is 46%. We lost to EIU for 16 straight years at one point and we have yet to be a conferance power - ever.
Yet myself and thousands of others are there supporting this team year after year, please don't label us fair-weather.
I'm not taking away from those that were amazing through out the game.....it was just sad to see people care more about leaving and getting out on time than to possibly help our team get an edge late. The weather was not a factor yesterday. It only snowed an inch at the most. Sadly, that will be the best crowd we'll see this year.
I'm not taking anything away from you. However, you are in a disappointingly small minority of fans who support the team despite its win/loss record.
