I definitely see what you are saying. As I said, I dont think Rudock gets quite enough credit. However, he also had the benefit of being a year old, and playing many, many more snaps than Beathard did. And as far as the "eyeball test" goes, you can go back and watch the second half of the Pitt game. Beathards decision to push the ball on certain downs and distances is what absolutely won us that game. He was making throws into windows that Jake would have never made. High risk, high reward throws. Also, I have been watching a lot of last years games from my DVR, and while I know they are just commentators, every one of them, when they were going through the pre game line ups, alluded to Jake needing to push the ball more, and be aggressive. So it isnt just Iowa fans that are seeing this. And we are at a point were we need a decision maker like that. Is he going to throw more pics? Absolutely. However, Id take that in exchange for more aggressive play that pushes the ball, keeps the O on the field, and our D off of it.
Also, if you listen to the pre season interviews from a lot of the offensive players, many of them allude to this. I understand that you havnt, as you being an ISU, which is obviously fine, but a lot of the receivers and TEs made mention to Beathards willingness to extend drives by pushing the ball over Jake's. Plus, Beathard has a much, much stronger arm. For instance, some game week interviews of the players came out, and Tevaun SMith our #1 reciever, had mentioned that when they ran deep routes, they would have to slow down because of Jake's lack of arm strength.
Again, why I dont think Jake was a bad QB at all, I think for what our O needs, Beathard is a better option. When Jake has a good running game, and a good D, he can manage a game and be a good QB. But last year, we had neither. We needed him to go out and make plays. Some games he would (NW, Indiana), and he would light it up. However, most of the time, he went into a shell (ISU, Ball st, second halfs vs Neb, and Wisc).
