Agreed. They're being smart by not stopping with their big lump 5 football schools. In addition to the recent Navy and Memphis adds they might as well have added Temple.

Basically the best they can do is hope to be the #6 football conference and cling to a BCS bid. They did that more by taking the MWC's best team than making themselves radically better. With Utah, TCU, and BSU all in BCS leagues now there's not the growing claim that a non-BCS conference is stronger than an AQ league.

In basketball the Memphis add keeps them in the ballpark of still being a top 3 league. Really I could see the top basketball conference being a toss up in any given year right now between B12, B10, ACC and Big East.

Louisville and UConn are very attractive teams to the B12 and ACC/B1G respectively. They realize at the very least they'll be losing those two at some point and likely Rutgers as well. Better to have Memphis in the fold now than to scramble later for scheduling.

This does make the CUSA/MWC merger/title game more practical from a numbers point of view in that both leagues could play round robin more easily now.

A "set" does not equal one year. What if next year Texas or Oklahoma win it all. Will that then be proof that recruiting stars do matter?
You are citing what happened last year and last year was an anomaly over a period of fifty or so years. It is the exception that a team with mostly two and three star recruits wins titles/championships, etc.

Clemson and FSU to 12 is awesome and would make the B12 the #1 football conference and in the ballpark for total TV market. Louisville/BYU makes B12 the #1 basketball conference but obviously that's not the goal.

The question I have is, if they add Louisvlle/BYU now and FSU/Clemson wait and see what happens, down the road would it be simple to add them for 14? Could or would they add them all for 14 right now? That'd be the #1 conference (or close enough not to matter) in pretty much every significant way.

In any of these scenarios BYU affects other football conferences in no way. Louisville takes a mediocre fb conference planning on having 13 to 14 teams down one, and the ACC teams leaving means the ACC still has 12 geographically basketball schools with UConn available as an ideal fit for them.

It wouldn't trigger near the seismic waves that the Big 12 having 4 departures did. The current ACC has raided for nearly half it's membership, two teams leaving shouldn't be a thing.

People also forget Texas/OK to west coast is two time zones, not one like WVU/FSU/Clemson. Texas to WVU might be comparable to a west coast trip in minutes but it's one hour toward the easier TV time zone, not two hours in the direction that pushes everything into late night coverage.

It just makes sense for a major conference to be anchored through the center of the country with a strong Texas football presence. The only thing that can take it off the rails is greed and corruption. Happened once, almost happened a second time, but seems like they've finally figured it out.
 
I thought playing for big 12 north titles was pretty fun as far as divisional interest goes..

I hope so (I hate the pompous "Big Ten Lite" ACC), but wasn't this the same conference that had Texas and ND seriously considering membership just 4-5 months ago?

The Big East has agreed to a settlement proposed by WVU, according to the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail, which cited an anonymous source. The two sides have been enjoined in cases in West Virginia and Rhode Island courts. WVU hopes to circumvent the league’s typical 27-month waiting period to leave for the Big 12 in 2012-13.
