Any time you play at Phog or any time against KU for that matter can expect some screw jobs by the refs. Bill Self is one of the best in the business on working the refs to get favorable calls. Have seen it play out many times over the years and never fails that if he gets worked up enough to get a T then following that all the sudden KU usually gets some calls to go their way. Huggy Bear works the refs pretty good to but lately his team has been so bad I don't think the refs are as intimidated by it anymore.
I will say that in the OU game recently boy did Hollywood Higgins crew really do a bad job overall and both teams had plenty of reason to complain. I mean there was a ref standing right there near Gabe and next to the OU bench when Gabe bonked a shot behind the backboard and it was not called a dead ball and we wound up getting the rebound and a basket off it. Moser was going nuts for good reason. Then the no-call when Lipsey got fouled on the inbounds pass was another badly missed call. Felt like all game that crew just didn't want to blow the whistle for anything.

And fortunately neither does TJ. He has a game plan to play aggressive defense which will lead to a foul discrepancy against ISU but will also lead to a win.
One of the first things you are taught when officiating basketball is to not "ball watch." When the shot goes up you immediately are either watching for contact on the shooter or rebounding fouls. It's kind of a loophole in coverage that no one is watching the ball at its peak, and when a fluky thing like that happens, it does look really bad.
Yeah, I love that TJ expects to foul more than the other team and won't ***** or let his team ***** about fouls. We fans take care of that. And I know it's not a popular take, but I actually think that we have been getting some pretty weird calls.
That being said, I can't remember if it was TCU or OU where we were way down on the fouls, and then they went really weird for us. Then the last 3 minutes were like huh? I 100% believe this was just poor/inconsistent officiating.
We just need to understand that the pace of the game with these amazing athletes is just so far removed from the officials athleticism that it must be unbelievably difficult to get in the right position to make a call. And we get the benefit of HD and slow motion to make up our minds. Those humans don't. We know that there are dirty officials, but I think the majority are trying to do the best they can. Unless it's against KU.. Kidding somewhat, as they have been so much more athletic than all of our players that they have set the curve on outrunning the officials. And obviously the school has been caught cheating, so it's hard to trust them. But I'm guessing that 4 game suspension for KU fixed it all.
Remember all of the times Iowa St won at home because they grab a rebound off of the first shot of a 2 shot free throw, run down the court, hit a three, and get to keep the points even though they realized that there should've been another free throw? And the game ended up going to overtime, when the road team should've won by three pts?
The crew, all 3 of them, that OU and KU had are the three worst individual refs of Big XII games. That they were all on the floor together on Tuesday in Lawrence gives me hope they won’t be there Saturday.
Last year alone there was the very weak flagrant on Bob, the absolute blatant goal tend in a critical moment, and then a changed 3 to a 2 when there was no evidence his foot was on the line but there was evidence that was behind the line lol. Lost by 1.

Yeah......and all those years Big 12 guards were allowed to pick up the ball after crossing half court and run it in for the game winning layups against KU.

Threads like this are a broken record but valid. We’ve had many games at the Phog since Larry E that have gone down to the wire, a few we’ve won and others we’ve lost in heartbreaking fashion. Net is that you can’t be in a 1 possession game at AFH because the refs will usually make an egregious call (or no call) or two at the end and hand the game to the Payhawks (new one that a buddy offered up today). You can almost bank on it so we need to be up 4 or 5 or more.
If I remember right the call on the floor was that Grill’s shot was ruled a 2 and they didn’t have the right camera angle to change it to a 3. Although video after the game showed him behind the line. My problem is that the instinct on the initial call was to favor Kansas. Likewise on the missed goaltend which can’t be reviewed. The officials seem eager to bask in the glory of pleasing the KU crowd at crunch time. Every game.
Good memory. I think that was an overtime game vs OU and he was inbounding in front of the scorer’s table and Mason or Graham were literally standing out of bounds jumping up and down. I think KU was behind and needed that turnover to have a chance.
He wasn't out of bounds. He did step closer after the ref told him to back off and even bragged about stepping closer, but he wasn't out of bounds.
Withey clearly fouling at mid-court that should have been his 5th, but instead they called it on a guy 4 feet away burned me worse.

If they have specific ref cameras, they had the angle to check that out.
