The Band?

Wow, why are all of you taking this so personally. I said that the band should not have to be "THE PRIDE OF IOWA STATE", you are responding as if i kicked the drum major in the nuts and am petitioning to have the band removed. This is not to discredit the band but ask yourself, "Why is the football team not the pride of iowa state, lets get Mac in the ****ing game and make football our pride."

Yes there were years where we sucked so bad that the band was the only stability in our life, but those were also the years when we had no chance against Iowa. And trust me, that is not now.........

It's tradition. You don't suddenly yank a few words from the pre-game line-up because football should be our pride. Just because we're too busy ritually calling our band "The Pride of Iowa State" doesn't mean we don't give a crap about the team they're playing for.

I've been to MANY basketball games (and football games), and I've never, EVER heard those words being yelled along with "Go Cyclones Go". Matter of fact, this thread is the first time I've even heard of those words being used to sing along with it. As far as I knew, there weren't any words to "Go Cyclones Go", and it was just a pep up type of quick song.

Heh, are you sure you're a 2002 Alum?

Also, I hope that song never goes away.

The "Don't Know The Words" tradition was born about 10 years ago, but has gotten a bit more inappropriate since then. It is quite possible to sing "Don't Know The Words" without using any vulgarities. An example:

Don't know the words
Don't know the words
Don't know the words, and I! don't! caaaaare!

They were singing that back in 1981, so it has been around more than 10 years. It is a tradition in itself.

I can't believe a few F-bombs bothers you that much.

Plus the band puts up with a whole lot of crap, my old roomate was in the band and he was telling me about a contingent who had to march in front of the student section at Kinnick and all I could think was "poor bastards". Though they shouldn't be playing during the game, I'm confident it won't happen again this year.

The f-bombs don't bother me so much. But I've been sitting by people with kids, and it's embarrassing. It's freaking no class, pathetic, and makes me think we have the same kind of lame, sad excuses for fans as other schools. I thought we were supposed to have higher standards at ISU, but I guess who gives a crap right?

Oh come on! The football team should be able to handle the ONE mistake of us playing to the snap. Like stated earlier ISU is going to be playing in Iowa City next week and I dont think it is going to be very quite there when they are trying to snap the ball.

I know we should have stopped playing and that we did play to long. It was a mistake and rarely it happens. But the team was halfway down the field so they should have still been able to hear the snap count.

The only person that can stop the whole band at once is the middle drummajor and that is a really hard job. When you are up there you have people yelling at you from all different angles telling you when you are supposed to play and what to play. And they have to look at the field and figure out when the play is over.

I personally felt really bad when the false start happened and I knew we had really screwed up. But I will do all that I can do to make sure that it does not happen again.

Marching bands are one of the things that makes College Football so awesome. You do not get the same atmosphere at an NFL game. I know that I am proud to have a great band at ISU. I have been going to ISU Football games since 1992, and we have always had a great band (even when the team was bad). Now that we are starting to have a decent football team, you want to turn on the band for minor mistakes. Leave them out of it, they are and have always been some of the best supporters of the Football team. Just my 2 cents

That all being said, if the band cannot stop quickly, then the middle drum major should stop sooner. Can he wear a headset so a spotter can say, "Quit Now?" Just a suggestion.
Band is great. Band is great. Band is great.
But, like the football team, it can get better through the season. Thank allah we have a band to help fill the empty stadium.
Being in the Big 12 in the Midwest, we should have more than 45,000 seated dierres. If they can do 70,000 at IowaCity, we should be able to do 50,000. Or why are we expanding the stadium? For the visiting Hawkeye and Red fans?
