The Avengers

One thing that I think will help make this ensemble cast work is the fact that the major characters (Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hulk) all had set up movies that establishes the backgrounds and characters. Even the Black Widow was featured in Iron Man 2, and Hawkeye (Clint Barton) was briefly introduced in Thor. This will let Whedon tell the story rather then tell backstories throughout the film.
Believe it or not but Marvel had a plan. I know the person who is editing the Avengers right now and while she is worried about studio tampering in the final cut I still have high hopes. I have yet to see something that Joss Whedon has done that I have not liked.

Marvel studios has to be feeling pretty good about how this experiment is paying off. We'll know they are really feeling confident when they announce they're following this up with Jeremy Renner in a Hawkeye solo movie and start casting for Ant-Man.
