Texas Tech's Spread Offense--How to stop it?

Obviously we know Tech is a 70% passing and 30% running team. They love to throw the ball and then throw some more. How in the world can the ISU defense stop this? As we know, our defense isnt the greatest out there. I'm not sure if we play 85% nickel the whole game or what kind of blitz packages we need to bring. One thing is for certain is that we HAVE to get pressure on the QB. If we dont do that, then its going to be a long day where i see Potts throwing for 400+ yards. We are going to have to be bringing someone almost every play since out DL cant get pressure on their own, even though that may leave someone open down field...I dont know how we are going to stop it. I understand its a little different then what it was with Leach, but its basically the same concept. I guess i just see our defense having trouble with it. I trust Wally to come up with a good game plan. Hopefully we can stop it, but i think turnovers will win this game for us if we can get them. Go Clones!!

IMO
  1. Keep everything in front of you and bend but don't break. No big plays.
  2. Tackle well-Limit yards after catch.
  3. Capitalize on mistakes.
  4. Don't blitz or if you do disguise it or they will throw to the vacated spot and burn you big.
Iowa plays the best defense against TT. Drop guys into coverage, make them go the length of the field without making a mistake, and then let the short field help you defend.
I like our match up against spread teams better than power running teams. Reump and Mcdonough have shown our best ability to get pressure. Let them get pressure up the middle (best pressure against the spread) and drop everyone else back and wrap up.

Of course, all of that is easier said than done

I have only seen them play once this year, but this looks like status quo TT right away(thats Tommy Tuberville). The offense amazingly went to pot as soon as he came in, and the defense has risen to the challenge. This will be a grind em affair, or we will get rolled. Lets hope the former. We need to beat this guy. He is trying to vulture too many of our recruits for my tastes.
 
I'm not sure how disciplined Texas Tech's offense is. If we can keep their gains to minimal amounts (3, 4, 5 yard pass plays) they may become impatient moving down the field at a relatively lethargic pace and make a mistake gambling further down field.
 
I would bet that TT has had some of the lowest sacks recorded against them under Leach. I don't think pressure helps as much against them as you don't have time and it's built to hit quick releases. I think our best bet is like others have said. Keep them in front of you and tackle them with the first guy. If you do that AND our offense finally starts to go, we win this game by 10 or more. :smile:
 
Interesting stats for the ISU pass defense I wasn't aware of until today (national rank):

Yards allowed per game: 143.8 (#10)
Opposing QB rating: 99.88 (#13)
Opposing QB comp. %: 51.2% (#14)
Interceptions: 7 (#9)
TDs allowed: 2 (#3)

We haven't exactly played against great QBs so far this year, and our poor rush defense means that teams have been running the ball a whole lot more than passing, but this is still a marked improvement from the last few years.

Less spectacular is Yards per attempt (6.8 for #58), but that still isn't horrible. Might we actually have a respectable pass defense this year? We'll certainly know a lot more after this weekend.

i have a strong distaste for the head coach tuberbutt the head coach at texas tech for his pirating of athletes that are committed to iowa state.
i would high -low potts on the first two plays that tt is on offense and get him out of the game. i would do the same thing to their back up qb and get him out of the game. that would put their offense in a state of shambles. i thought texas tech crapped on mike leach over the baby james incident.i hope leach gets millions on the lawsuits that he has has pending against texas tech. i thought leach was one damn good coach that was doing an outstanding job of coaching at texas tech.
i hope we kick texas tech's arse good.GO CYCLONES!!!!!!!!

At least we're not seeing opponents complete 70% of their passes like we used to, not so long ago.
 
Getting pressure on the QB is going to be a little overrated, as TT's spread is designed to get the ball out of the QB's hand very quickly. I'd consider using a dime package - have so many players in the secondary that nothing downfield is open. Force TT to throw underneath and keep everything in front of the defense. Perhaps if we're fortunate we get pressure via very good downfield coverage.

I should have specified Yards After Catch. Not yards after contact. Although both will matter. I trust our guys tackling TTs receivers when they get their hands on them vs tackling a power runner.

Agree 100%. Even pressure from the DE position is tough to get. IMO- against TT the best pressure is up the middle. It is the fastest and disrupts timing, throwing lanes and vision.

Some of those numbers are due to the fact that teams can run all over us and don't have to pass. In KSU and iowa's case, why pass when you are picking up 5-10 YPC?

This. I like our D's chances against a team that doesn't have a power running game. It isn't like Texas Tech is going to try and line up and run the ball down our throat. I think this is a very good thing for our defense. IMO I am much more comfortable with a team trying to throw a ton against our defense then I am with a team that wants to pound the ball in between the tackles with their running game.
 
Has the TT QB been knocked down much this year? If he can be rattled and throw wild, we can win from the defensive side.
