Texas Tech's Spread Offense--How to stop it?

Obviously we know Tech is a 70% passing and 30% running team. They love to throw the ball and then throw some more. How in the world can the ISU defense stop this? As we know, our defense isnt the greatest out there. I'm not sure if we play 85% nickel the whole game or what kind of blitz packages we need to bring. One thing is for certain is that we HAVE to get pressure on the QB. If we dont do that, then its going to be a long day where i see Potts throwing for 400+ yards. We are going to have to be bringing someone almost every play since out DL cant get pressure on their own, even though that may leave someone open down field...I dont know how we are going to stop it. I understand its a little different then what it was with Leach, but its basically the same concept. I guess i just see our defense having trouble with it. I trust Wally to come up with a good game plan. Hopefully we can stop it, but i think turnovers will win this game for us if we can get them. Go Clones!!

Put one of our QB's in to start for TT.

FWIW- I saw an iowa team and an ISU team beat TT by playing bend but don't break defense. Now those were a long time ago but they still worked.

Issue with playing tight, is a lot of teams don't have the personell to play tight on everyone and that creates a good match up somewhere. I admittedly have not seen TT play much this year but if it takes pressure then we may be in trouble as we just can't put pressure on the QB. since we can't put pressure on the QB then we need to play to our strengths.

We might be ok taking some chances by bringing extra pressure and going man coverage, once in a while. Reeves and LJ seem like they would be capable of handling this, though I don't know about our safeties. Obviously if we bring extra heat, we need to actually get to the QB, which means we'd probably have to disguise the blitzes (i.e. bring a LB, but drop a DE into coverage).

I think we probably have to start out in "bend but don't break" mode and adjust from there if they are tearing us up.

Okay, "good" was an overstatement but it's not like you guys just gave up on preventing the other team from scoring as I think many people allude to. Three of the last seven years you listed were top 50 defenses - certainly not elite level, but worthy of a BCS conference football team.

I didn't mean to imply that Leach is the only guy who can effectively coach a spread, or that his version is the only one that works. But it will take Tubberville completely buying into the idea, which I've read he didn't so much do at Auburn, for the OC to be effective. However, you guys obviously have the personnel and culture already in place to run a pass-based spread so he may not be nearly as inclined to abandon it as he was at Auburn.

I know you didn't mean to imply it, but it seems like almost all Tech fans think that, and arguing with them gets tiresome.

You know Besser, I couldn't care less if Tech continues to run a pass heavy offense, and some Tech fans will disagree with me, but as long as we run something conducive to our strength, it's an exciting offense, and puts points up on the board, I don't care.

Our RB situation is just starting to get ridiculously good, I would think it's stupid to not use them.

Next year, we lose Batch, but have 4* Stephens, who will be a JR, and 4* Harrison Jeffers, who also will be a JR. Then we will have 4* Kenny Williams who will be a true freshman, and Bradley Marquez...who should be a 4*, too. Now, that's some ridiculous depth at RB, especially for a team who supposedly passes a lot. That also doesn't include two more 3* who will be freshman, but are really coming in as ATH's.

All of our QB's we currently have are mobile, except one, but that one might be the best of the bunch...4* Scotty Young, who will be a RS frosh next year, and we also have 4* Michael Brewer enrolling in January, and will be going through Spring next season.

If our WR/OL situation was as good as our RB, or QB situation, we would really be almost unstoppable on offense.

So, really, whatever offense Tubs, and Brown think they can win with, I'm all for it.

None. And it was pretty well known from the start that cqulin would jump to Tech if given the offer.

That's funny, because we never heard of him until January. Supposedly, there's some other players on offense who are committed to schools who are REALLY listening to Tubs right now.

I would guess these are speed guys, since Tubs/Brown need to upgrade the speed of our team. We are a fairly slow team right now.

Have to admit that Cqulin was a complete surprise to us on signing day. So far, he's making quite an impression on our coaches as a headhunter. Other than Cqulin, I didn't we were stepping on each other's toes in recruiting.

a 5 or 6 compared to the big 12 south. up here in the north our receivers pull plows behind them when on the field.

Yes...Tubs said in the Spring that we would probably rate about a 5, or 6 on a scale of 1-10 as far as speed goes.

So, that's pretty mediocre speed, but some of our recruits/transfers will kick that up a notch.

Good lord, if Tech is a 5 or 6 than we are a 3 or 4 tops. :twitcy:
