Tennessee cleans house

Interesting discussion this morning, I thought, on ESPN radio. J Will, Zubin, Keyshawn. They wondered why any school ever disciplines itself or reports violations. They said basketball schools Arizona, Kansas, Creighton and another I can't recall; the FBI caught them paying cash to recruits, it's been 4 years and the NCAA is still thinking about what to do, if anything. The only logic they could come up with was they wanted to get rid of their coach at Tennessee but didn't want to have to pay out his contract. So they report his violations, fire him and tear up his contract. Save a lot of $$$ and give yourself a slap on the wrist for which the NCAA will say, OK, we're good.

So, the point is that the NCAA is worthless in dealing with cheating, and the only way cheating will ever result in any punishment is if the school wants to fire their coach anyway. Sounded like they were right.

I was kidding about Tennessee going after Pollard. However, it did cross my mind that if Tennessee hired Pollard (instead of Danny White) that Campbell might be willing to go there (like Huepel). Point is we need to make sure we keep Pollard from leaving more than we should worry about Campbell leaving.

I've been enjoying reading the TN site over the last week or so because the board is pretty active and a lot of them are pretty humorously delusional.

Anyway, they seem to be coming to terms with their new hire, but are still pretty salty that they couldn't get any one better. The people that appear to be insiders have posted about the other candidates that they tried to get, but didn't have any luck. Campbell wasn't one of them because, according to the insiders, he really wouldn't take any calls. The TN fans are super surprised by this because they think if they had offered $7 million a year for 7 years, OF COURSE he would take it.

That's all funny but this poster also claimed that he had heard that another Power 5 school made a run at Campbell at some point and wouldn't take no for an answer and embarrassed themselves by not giving up.

I have no idea if it is true, but wouldn't you just love to know the school?

Buddy's son in Orlando heard that Florida State was high on him and planned a big presentation for him last year but he didn't show any interest. Maybe that's it?

Yeah pretty sure the school being referenced is Florida St.

IIRC, they had just fired their coach before the season was out in his second year so I imagine Campbell was smart to be skeptical regardless of how much they wanted him. They ultimately hired the guy from Memphis and the AD apparently quietly moved on to another job afterward.

I still remember the first time they tried to interview Campbell and it was very public they were going after Campbell, when they realized Campbell wouldn’t even listen, UT’s PR arm quickly leaked out that “Tennessee was not pursuing Iowa State’s Matt Campbell”. They had to quickly back track because it would be a bad look if even “lowly Iowa State‘s” coach told UT to pound sand. They really think they are up there with Bama, OU, Clemson, and tOSU don’t they?

Florida St had started telling boosters it was done and started planning a press conference. MC hadn't even talked to them yet, they just didn't think the Iowa State Coach would turn them down.
