Tennessee cleans house

The Athletic has a couple good stories on the job and the firing today. Basically Peyton is coming in on the search committee, and the plan is to have the intern guy run the program until the new AD is hired.
From there they mentioned Freeze, but they would have to get an OK from the SEC to hire him, the guy at Coastal, the coach at Cincinnati and a few others.

They also pointed out that this is a difficult time of the year to be hiring a new coach, and that no one is going to take the job without the AD being hired first. So it may be a while before they hire anyone.
LOL them thinking they have a prayer at Fickel. Much like Campbell, Fickell is already too good for that job. He can wait at Cincy for a big-time job that isn't run by delusional morons and assured to be under constant NCAA scrutiny. The job is worse than it was the last time around, and they got turned down by pretty much everybody during the last search.

This has been the rumored Herman landing spot for several weeks now. Boosters and alumni wanted Pruitt out, so they hired their own search firm to find wrongdoings (same thing KU did with Beatty) so they dont have to pay the full buyout.

I believe Jeff Fisher has interest in the job as well. There was a recent interview with him stating he would like to be considers if the position became open.

To clarify, Fulmer wasn't fired. He's retiring--he's 70 and views this as good time to step away once a new AD is hired.

People who float Freeze and Jeff Fisher don't know what they're talking about. With the NCAA knocking at the door with major sanctions in the offing, you don't hire the guy who almost got Ole Miss the death penalty. Also, Fisher says he's interested, but the interest is one-way. Tennessee will go for a college coach. Who they can get at this point--who knows?

They honestly should hire Malzahn. It was dumb for Auburn to fire him.

I think you are overestimating TN's standing on a national level.
Not at all. Tennessee has a MASSIVE Athletic Department that Usually does very well (when they are selling out in football). The Football Program is the only problem they currently have, and that can be fixed. When they do, they will regain their standing. This is 2 years old, but Tennessee has a much larger ($48 million more) Athletic Budget than Iowa State. That might be appealing to a man like Jamie Pollard. He'd be a great hire by Tennessee. I only mention this, as it would be a clever way for a school to poach Matt Campbell. Hire Jamie first. Not what I want of course!

Wasn't there some controversy about Fulmer involved with pushing Johnny Majors out the door at Tennessee so that he could be head coach. At least I think Majors felt that way. That's a long time ago so my recollection of that situation might be a bit hazy.

From the article: "For years, Majors made it clear that he believed there was some sort of behind-the-scenes subterfuge that led Fulmer to taking over"
