Tailgate in Iowa City

I was addressing the fact that ISU fans seem to make fun of Iowa for giving away tuition to 5 student the tune of $40,000.....yet it doesn't dawn on them that they are giving away 5M-10M annually by selling tickets at 1/2 price to "entice" it's fan base to show up at games. Not only that but weren't ISU student season tickets down by 2000 this year, and required the student to purchase football season ticket in order to get basketball season ticket? ISU has more gimmicks than anyone to boost ticket sales. Not that this is a bad thing, I wish Iowa's marketing department was half as savvy as the ISU department.

no, no, iowa state sold out of fball student tickets... Many student tickets for fball were still purchased after it was announce that bball tickets were sold out.

and still, the fact iowa has to rely on these gimmicks when they've had far more success the last 15 years is embarassing. It's fine you don't want to admit it, but it's true.

They tried to amp up student ticket sales with a gimmick, but you make peanuts off the student. They didn't offer anything to regular season ticket holder, except to re seat, ask for more donations and pay full price for your seat (unlike ISU, who offered no donation for seat, discounted seat, and then even more discounted seats). According to you Michigan, OSU, FSU, LSU and Florida should be embarrassed as well.

It’s not just a problem in Ann Arbor. The Wall Street Journalreported that student attendance fell 7.1% from 2009 to 2013, and that it has even fallen over the past few years at games hosted by perennial powerhouses such as Ohio State, Michigan State, Florida State, LSU, and the University of Florida. A year ago, observers took note that home attendance was down for the majority of teams in the SEC, even though the conference has thoroughly dominated college football in recent years.

Look at the google maps satellite pic and you will get a great view of tailgating around Kinnick. My old spot is now becoming a subdivision. Generally looks like the cluster %*$& that it is.

can you say this isn't embarassing? Good grief you are daft..

again, that's not my point. It's simply astounding, but not shocking you don't grasp what I'm saying. Reply when you learn how to comprehend. K thx.

Just let me know when you realize just how daft you are being. It is a simple promotion from a advertiser, happens all the time. If you think Hawk fans should be embarrassed for selling 65-70K tickets, earning 20M plus on those sales, and being in the top 10% of college football ticket revenues, then keep on being a hater just trying to hate. I'd rather be Iowa than ISU who earns 1/2 the money cause they have to basically give away their product.

If you'd rather be Iowa...why don't you just head on over to hawkeye nation and y'all can backslap and gladhand over how awesome you are.

I do that regularly. The thread was about tailgating in Iowa City, which I have lots of experience in doing. Sorry I got sidetracked with CyDude, I'll stop and let the tread get back on topic.

Tailgating in IC sucks. The PerMar rent-a-cops are wannabe cops on power trips and can be real a-holes. It's spread out so there is not as good as atmosphere as there is in Ames plus you have to deal with idiot drunk Hawk fans that are not always the most hospitable. Last time we went to IC was several years ago and we couldn't even get our RV parked before some idiot Hawk fan wanted to start talking smack before we even backed into our spot on Friday night. My brother and his buddy had beer bottles thrown at their car the morning of a game because they had personalized ISU plates.

I'd rather stay home when the game is in IC, not worth the walk to and from the stadium win or lose because some drunk idiot Hawk fan will likely try to start something with you even though you haven't said a word or looked in their direction.

Don't listen to any of these heathens. Go to the Finkbine lot. There'll be plenty of ISU fans/tents set up there, it's a nice big lot area. Look for me. I'll be the one in black and gold.

Seriously, Finkbine's your best bet. But get there early. We get there at the strike of 6 when it opens. You could stand to get there a little later than that to scope out the Cyclone turf, but don't wait too long or it'll be tough finding parking.

We are bringing a smaller bus (think airport shuttle) down with about 15 people (about 1/2 hawk fans, 1/2 clones, yes we all get along just fine) Was wondering where would be the best place to park, Finkbine or that church parking lot on Melrose. I parked in the church about 10 years or so ago and partied but didn't know if they still allowed "tailgating" there. I do know it is still open for parking but we wanna have a good time (think flippy cup/beer pong, etc). May need Dean's or some other hawk's input for this.

As a Cyclone that attends every home hok football game (my dad gives me free tickets). Park in the free Hancher lot. Plenty of space. Have to get there early because the Taverns have finally realized what a great, free spot it is. Ride the free cambus shuttle to and from the game. Quicker, easier, less walking and plus you won't donate money to hokdom by parking at Finkbine.

Wonder how many d-bag Hawk fans will be chucking full beer cans at people for wearing cardinal and gold?

That was actually A. Arnaud trying to hit Hawk fans....but per usual he missed the mark. (9 career picks thrown vs Iowa).

Ha, funny. Make light of your classless fans that will throw anything at opposing fans.

Lighten up Francis, that was funny stuff. I tailgate with a lot of ISU fans both in IC and Ames for this game, and nobody ever has a problem. For the most part both fan bases are pretty great for this game, and HN has just as many stories of bad behavior by ISU fans. Either way both are the exception, not the norm.

Not this week. Closed do to wet grass. Seriously. This will make the space crunch on Saturday exponentially worse.

I always love the ********g matches that threads like these inevitably devolve into. Everyone has their own anecdotal experiences that they think define each fanbase and gameday environment. For the record, several of the older Iowa fans in my tailgating group that follow the team all over the country, refuse to ever set foot in Ames due to poor treatment at past ISU-Iowa games. By no means do I think this defines your fanbase, but it certainly does for some people.

In terms of your fabled "pregame experience", I've been to probably 150 or so Iowa games, including 11 roadies, and the one time I was in Ames, it would rank right near the bottom in terms of awesome tailgating environments. It was totally lame. I've had much more fun tailgating at places like Northwestern, Indiana, and Minnesota, and for a few of those games total attendance was a fraction of what you typically get in Ames. This is just my personal experience. If you all enjoy it, great. I'll take my cramped, crowded yard in IC 100 times out of 100.

Will you please spend the summer before the 2016 season on Iowa message boards? Bring your sig that brags about beating Kansas with you.

You are a better man than me Lakes. The abuse you took on this site, while just trying to rationally discuss football was insane. The amount of stupid thrown at you, the outright degrading and mockery of NDSU were way out of line. I doubt you will be treated so badly when you come to Hawkeye sites before the 2016 game.
