Student Section

Spent some time yesterday talking to a former member of the CAC before the game. Discussed a few things like the empty upper deck every game, what the hell the CAC actually "does", and general basketball stuff. For that upper deck, we agreed they either need to take some seats away from the students or they need to change the policy to something like having to pick up your tickets each week. As for what the CAC actually does? Nothing. I've never been a fan of them, but they do even less than they did the past two years (which is saying something). The CAC is merely a group of people who get reserved seating. That's it. Oh and the curly haired blonde girl that we all hold so dearly? Apparently one of the co-chairs is her sister. Nice to see you don't even have to work to get on that thing, just gotta know somebody.

BUT, the Cyclone Alley organization is not the problem. While they don't do anything to fix the problems, they aren't keeping any students from getting into the game. I spent the entire game yesterday yelling and screaming to urge the team on, and was surrounded by many who looked at me as if I was from another planet. Many students today just don't find it cool (or enjoyable I guess) to go to these games and get into it. And I have no idea how to "fix" that. Preaching to the choir on here though. All of the students on this site are the ones at every game and getting into it, just as all of the "old folks" on here are the ones who are the first to stand up, yell, and urge on the crowd around them.

very much agree. I'm a very vocal, active fan, and I know I have a very loud voice, but I can't count the times I'll get looks from fans around me, as if to say, pipe down. It's so odd. If they don't want to cheer, no one can make them, but I just wish they wouldn't go so far as to discourage others!

Different year ... same problem.

Hopefully these tickets will just end up being sold to the general public. Nothing would be holding back students from just purchasing them then if they really wanted in.

Perusing the thread, the students who show up are hated for looking like nerds and virgins. The students who don't come are hated for not coming but presumed to not be nerds and virgins. Do you all want the ones who come not to come any more and the ones that do not come to stop having sex and being cool and to show up?

It would be great if all of the fans like you would get all seated together. You guys would make some noise!

You guys are pathetic. Students don't get into it for a couple Big 12 basement dwellers and you feel the need to ******* crucify them? No our student section won't be as intense as all of the blue bloods, we don't have anywhere near the history of them. You guys like to use Kansas and Duke as examples. Their most recent Final 4 appearances are in 2012 and 2010 respectively, ours... 1944. After every game I come on here and win or lose there's 10 threads complaining about something and maybe 1 or 2 positive threads. Get off of your damn high horses. /rant

Posters not wanting to see 500 empty seats already sold to students, when there is people wanting to get in that can't has nothing to do with being on a "high horse". Besides, yesterday wasn't the only time. Many brought it up how crowds were dead vs. a ranked OU and KState when they were here, too. We don't expect it to be as intense as KU or Duke (your final 4 examples.) In this thread, I haven't once compared our student section to anyone else's except ourselves. Just would like to see it continue to live up to the great reputation it created THEMSELVES... that we all had come to embrace and enjoy. But back to your point about bottomfeeders, will a rated, second place big12 Texas team vs. your team that could use a big home win be worthy enough then for Tuesday night?

The student section will not be filled on Tuesday. I can call that already, however it will be more filled, and more lively than it was for Tech. I don't know why it is the way it is. I think it is partly ISU is a victim of their own success type of deal. The student tickets were sold out in the summer. Everyone was told, buy now or there will be no tickets available for you. And that probably led to a lot of impulse buys, from fans who realised when they bought them or once the season rolled around that they are not going to go to most of the games. Maybe the ticket price is too cheap? But I would be scared of pricing out students if I was in the athletic department. You want it available to every student who wants to go, but you want to avoid making the tickets so cheap that people don't value them.

I still think the best solution is to sell as many as they do now, but then make students pick up tickets a week or two in advance of a game. (Give students a large window to pick up tickets, 1 week if deemed necessary). Then if tickets are not picked up during the window, they go on sale to public as GA seating. This strategy has multiple purposes. First it allows students to know if they are getting into the game or not. No getting turned away after waiting in the cold for hours. Second it allows Hilton to be filled for less appealing games. And third it allows the athletic department to double (or triple since they are already overselling) dip on the upper deck seating sales.

This was kind of a long post all typed on my phone, so if it doesn't make sense or rambles on, too bad.

Sounds about right

Whatever solution works would be welcomed. Must be a way to figure it out. Not an easy one, though, I'm sure.

I've said this before and I will say it again, I just love it when cyclone alley shows up in force, is crazy and making Hilton Magic all it's hyped to be. It's what's so great about college sports.....COLLEGE KIDS!!! My advice is just enjoy it to the fullest and have fun.

With that said, the student attendance this year has been a disappointment (minus a few key games). I said earlier in a post, based on the poor attendance, the upper section should be released to season ticket holders, then single game tickets, if applicable, in attempts to increase attendance. If this were to happen I want to warn the students that once those seats are released to the general public, they are likely never going to be the student seats again. It's just something to think about. I would much rather they be filled with what makes college sports so special. but once they are gone, they will probably be gone. These games are a bit of an "audition" for the future of cyclone alley IMO.

I'm all for a crazy crowd, but wouldn't it be weird if everyone was hootin' and hollerin' for the full length of a timeout? Think about it. There's no action and you are yelling random things at the opposition? Is that the plan? It's socially weird.

Everything is hyper-social today. It never ends, even at a basketball game. People are more self-conscious and not willing to yell and act crazy because they will be judged by those around them.

I recently saw a video that said we lose creativity as we age not because our brains change but because we are worried about that next business deal, community gossip, what your coworkers/bosses think, and the like. I know I've been given a few weird looks when I cheer and yell loudly. My wife tells me not to do the smile or bicep cam because she thinks it's embarrasing. So yeah, cheer as loud as you can while in college- it is never the same.

No matter what happens with the student section... I really hope they keep having those girls hold up signs telling the kids which way to wave their arms during free throws. No reason to mess with awesome.

:jimlad:? Those are so stupid, they have zero effect on free throws.
