Student Section

I like the new "3" and miss big Georges.....but I really think Iowa State University of Science and Technology with all our enginerds and architect cardboard-loving design majors could generate the BIGGEST cardboard effigy ever in the history of college basketball.....I still like the bald Bill Self, but too late for that, but something huge with moving parts that spans like 30 rows of the student section and has to be supported by the majority of the kids there would be insane. Floppy Smart would be good, but a waste of effort too for that has-been turd. Biggest Georges would be good....Veishia float comparable.

YES!

I want a 100 foot Bald Bill Self Cardboard cutout.

I also think it's like ~$300 for a cell phone jammer.

-Edit: They might be illegal though.

Who's the audio control guy? That's the job I want. Blasting motivational music over the PA, John Belushi's Animal House catch phrase. YMCA, whatever... My favorite is when they play a "false" crowd noise from some other sporting event, and then they just keep turning up the volume! ...makes everyone believe that Hilton is Rockin'!

I said in the last thread about this, but the sad truth is that 1230 on a Saturday is like a normal person waking up at 6am with a hangover. Not all of them but a good %.

This is true. I regularly slept until 1 pm during my days at Willow hall. I also did not have much involvement in sporting events back then, besides occasionally drinking to celebrate a big victory.

In any case, something needs to change with CA. Lack of participation and attitude is an embarrassment. I think selling the upper deck as GA is a good idea. Plenty of folks looking for tickets right now.

Well, having the members of CA actually do **** for one would be a good place to start.

I find the discussion on student section attendance amusing. Its like nobody here watches games that take place in other arenas and sees far more glaring lack of attendance. Or its like nobody notices the fact that there are holes in all of the other sections too, but because the student section fills to the front the empty seats are all consolidated at the back.

That said, i do feel like the energy from the student section that is there has disappeared this year. Where are all the crazy costumes, posters, giant heads, etc that we had over the last couple years? For that matter, why is Jared Brackens not running around in the fat lady suit anymore?

One solution i would have for the gap in the balcony- sell some sort of rush\standby option at gametime based on how attendance is looking at that particular game. Dont need to oversell more (creating bigger issues at big games) or take away more of their seating (they used to have the other balcony too as i remember), just make a limited number available on a game by game basis.

Sure, if you like stereotypes.

I don't do reddit but I know a lot of people who use it regularly and they don't fit that description at all.

Playing with a phone during a basketball game is sad. It's somewhat forgivable for women who are dragged there. Just irrational for anyone claiming to be a fan. Halftime is plenty of time for the opiate addictive crowd to plug into the matrix. Otherwise why even go?

Being on your phone during timeouts is just as bad as being on it during the game play. During timeouts we should still be yelling and screaming and making our opponents life hell. But, when a timeout is called, everyone sits down as one, and all take their phones out. Seriously, people cannot stay off of their phones for more than 10 minutes at a time?
There's also a difference between charged timeouts and official timeouts. I'd much rather check my phone than watch another damn "flex cam" video.

I agree with Rabbuk, put the phone down and watch the damn game you nerd, and I also discredit the reddit community. Bunch of geeks who think they know better than everyone else because they're good at using a ****** message board with a terrible interface. reddit is for overused memes and gifs, exaggerated stories that nobody would believe in real life, and bit coin dweebs who think Ron Paul can save the world.
You obviously haven't been on /r/CFB or /r/CollegeBasketball then.

I agree. I agree. I agree. If we keep having dumb **** like Applebee's Apple Shuffle, Flex cam, delta dental smile cam, and kcci drive home weather forecast... I'll do what I want on my phone during timeouts. The only thing I use my phone for during a game is to send texts back and forth with the old man about the game. I only do it when stupid marketing ploys, like the previously listed, are played during timeouts. They are momentum killers anyway.

As for Reddit, you obviously haven't ventured past the front page if you think everyone on it is fedora tipping, pimple faced, neck beards.

THIS is the stuff that we should be complaining about. I can't even remember how many times in the past four years that Hilton has been rocking, the visitors have called time out, and that awful "Put a smile on your face" song comes on.

Does that happen, though? Unless they use a visiting team's as the official timeout (which I'm not sure if they can do that), I don't think there's time for them to go to a TV commercial, so they don't do that 'commercial-y' stuff. It's only ever during official timeouts (16/12/8/4) that the energy-killers come in.

I could be misremembering, but it's not much different if ISU is on a run and Hilton is rocking and we force a turnover out of bounds to go into a media timeout. Then you get the Flex-Cam or Drive Home Weather update at the worst possible time.

This is my third year at Iowa State and I think today was the worst crowd I have ever been apart of while in college. I have been to non-conference games with more buzz than today. I don't know what the deal is but it's embarrassing trying to start a CYCLONE....POWER chant only to have 40% of the students participate. People make fun of the band, but good lord... they were the most enthusiastic fans there today and without them the atmosphere might have been on the same level as the atmosphere at a football school.

If the student section doesn't show up Tuesday night, every upper deck student section seat should be sold to the public for the rest of the year. Every. Single. One.

Thanks for speaking up as a student. In fact, why do some posters look at this thread as all negative? (or calling people idiots, for that matter). Quite frankly, its a compliment to the students. They're being told that they are what fires up our crowd and our team. They 'make' Hilton Magic and bring the rest along. They've been praised ALOT. They are mentioned as a recruiting tool. Seems to me it would be nice to be wanted like that. Would just love to see them back in full throttle. Heck, I'd offer to pay for fathead signs, etc.. I've already talked to several students and they agree that they want things to be better.

Here are several reasons for diminishing attendance at The Hilton:

1- young people no longer participate in "competitive" sports. Think participation "trophies."

2- admit it ... They are techno geeks with independent lives around their eye phones. People and crowds are irrelevant outside their little hand held escape device.

3- nothing to play for ... Kansas will always win the conference With their Mickey Ds ... Football is almost as bad.

4- cannot identify with the players and some of their antics.

5- losing critical games and never overcoming the "we didn't play for x minutes".

6- no blowout wins

7- the games are too painful to watch (see 6 above).

8- I concession "gouging" prices. Ridiculous.

9- we beat Iowa ... So who cares.

10- over selling and hyping the team. Reality bites when the Clones can't win on the road except for the bottom feeders.

11- getting embarrassed on national tv against WV ... Players played like whimps ... Totally out if the game. Shameful.

12- women's basketball is truly dis functional right now. No chemistry and lack of intensity like we've seen in the past.

Wow. You really accept 4,5,6, 7, and 9 would be reasons? That makes me really sad.
