Story County Vaccinations

Anyone have insight into why Story County is such a challenge when it comes to this?

Less vaccine hesitancy + more urgency. More rural areas have a greater percentage of folks either not wanting the vaccine at all or are in no particular hurry get it.

When Story county started, they went by age - so they a started with the people over 100 and worked their way down. Once they were done with a specific age, the dropped down to the next year. It worked like this, they did all the 80 year olds and once they were done, went to the 79 year olds and so on. Other counties just said if you fall in the age groups set by IDPH sign-up.

I'm shocked that who ever he goes to for primary care won't arrange for him to come in and get a shot. Our local hospital clinics in carroll and crawford county called their patients up by age and preexisting conditions starting over a month ago. Thrifty White and Hy Vee in Denison were both taking appts. yesterday.

People over 100? What’d that take, a couple minutes on the first day?

Can you go pick him up and drive him to a more rural pharmacy/Hy-Vee? Assuming he would feel safe with you in the car with you being vaccinated.

Spending a day on the road is a minimal time investment to make sure he gets taken care of.

No but thank you for the thought. His doctors all say the shots are hard to come by. My cynical view is doctors dont want involved in this maze. I dont blame them. They saved his life.

My heart aches for what you have been through. The parenting gig is for life and this has been such a hard time worrying about loved ones.

I haven’t had my second shot yet, but maybe someone fully immunized would be willing to drive him if he can get an appointment?

Go to vaccine hunter and find a pharmacy (probably hy vee). I drove 40 minutes and had my 1st shot within 3 days of being eligible.

Yes That is what is going to happen. But it is weird he could get in in Ankeny but not in Ames? Where are the shots going in Ames? Where is the "those that are susceptible" first. We will make it happen. Thanks everyone.

I dont think the doctors want to be involved. They all express the same theme that shots are hard to come by.

The @iavaccinealerts Twitter account is great, that’s how I got mine

We got lucky as someone told us CVS in Target was taking appointments the first week of March. We got online and got our first shot the next day. From day one I would never have depended on McFarland Clinic to ever call us.

Even Boone County pharmacies were literally calling people due to abundance of vaccines. Never heard that from any place in Story County.

Also have a higher percentage of elderly and high risk people so higher rates of vaccines would have been pumped towards them faster than others. The younger population of Ames probably hurt story county for early vaccine distribution.

We ended up in Marshalltown and Des Moines. Ames was impossible. most people I know have gone out of town/county. No idea who is getting all the Ames appointments.

It’s whoever happens to be checking at the right time. I drove from the Grimes area to get my second Pfizer a couple weeks ago at the west HyVee.

Was kind of weird with my dad's Dr. as it was ME who finally called to put him on a wait list back in February. I would have thought at least that part would have been automatic but this Dr. also seems to be 'it is what it is' about other things where simple solutions are possible.

Luckily he got in somewhere else and is taken care of but the lack of urgency was off putting.

Seems like they should be redistributed the vaccines from places that have little demand to places like Ames that have greater. My wife got in at Ames Hyvee, but minutes later when she went to sign me up all appointments were already booked. So I ended up going to Marshalltown.

I think if a county doesn’t use a certain percentage of their weekly allocation, their next one gets reduced? Not 100% sure

A lot of things in Ames aren't well-managed. Without knowing all the details behind the scenes, it doesn't surprise me that it would be tougher here.
