I got mine at Walgreens in Indianola and I got lucky and just opened up the website at the right time. It was only my second time checking.

I had similar luck. Checked the HyVee site on Easter and found one at the Altoona HyVee the next day. An hour later and I would’ve been out of luck

I went to the website for my county just to familiarize myself with it for when I became eligible. I would've been in the last group, < 62, no pre-existing mortalities, etc. On a whim I filled out the online questionnaire (honestly), and was offered several dates and times to choose from. I felt a little sheepish about it but figured what the heck. I felt even more apprehensive walking into the building that morning, but immediately noticed a wide range of ages, only one person I would call morbidly obese (although my threshold is probably too high for that from what I understand), and nobody with obvious pre-existing conditions such as on O2, etc. It is impossible to spot a lot of medical problems just by looking at somebody though I realize. Anyhow, get Moderna #2 this coming Wednesday.I had similar luck. Checked the HyVee site on Easter and found one at the Altoona HyVee the next day. An hour later and I would’ve been out of luck
The thing that irritates me most about this process is that I think we already had the apparatus in place in Iowa to make this work much more smoothly.
In our little rural county, the county public health department took the lead. Anyone could call them and leave their health conditions and age, and they called you when it was your turn. Just using a phone for the high proportion of poor and elderly who have no internet. Notices in newspaper and bulletin boards at businesses and schools as well as social media.
We only have one pharmacy in town so while people could schedule through them, they also coordinated with public health to get in people in higher risk groups.
I am sure it is more complicated in larger counties with more pharmacies, but each county public health department should have been taking the lead in making sure the higher risk people knew the process they could take to get shots as soon as possible. It appears to be a statewide network with no state direction
