Story County Vaccinations

I got mine at Walgreens in Indianola and I got lucky and just opened up the website at the right time. It was only my second time checking.

I had similar luck. Checked the HyVee site on Easter and found one at the Altoona HyVee the next day. An hour later and I would’ve been out of luck

IDK where in Iowa you are, but the gf went on HyVees site on wednesday, and got us signed up for shot #1 on sunday at the Johnson Ave HV in CR. No notice, first time she looked. Now maybe she just got lucky, but I think places are available. Just maybe not in Ames.

My tips after scheduling a few people:

- Check the CVS site around midnight, or 2 am. They update the spots at Target overnight. You seem to have to choose a state like Flordia or something that has vaccines, then choose Iowa. The appts go fast.
- Follow this Twitter account - they just listed an Ames one three minutes ago: https://twitter.com/IAVaccineAlerts
- Also check this site: https://www.brady-software.com/vaccine-hunter Fort Dodge is likely going to be your best bet, but Marshalltown also often has extra spots.
- Watch for events from Hy-Vee in particular, but at the Story Co level. They do them in Nevada often.
- Get on wait lists at Nucara, Boone County Hospital, etc. They'll email you w/openings.

yep when I checked they had 20 appointments. I decided ten minutes later to sign up my daughter and they were down to two appointments left. They go quick. It’s basically luck

I live in WDM and ended up driving to Corydon to get my first shot, and will be going back next Friday to get my second. They were begging people in the county to come in so they didn't get their allocation cut back. The person who gave me my shot said they were seeing more people from outside the county than those that live in the county.

I used the vaccine hunter Twitter to find shots for my kids - got the 19 yr-old scheduled for today from seeing something on Twitter on Monday. For my 16-yr old happened to be on the website last Friday night and refreshed the page and one popped up in Urbandale for Pfizer and got her scheduled.

It takes some work, and a little luck but we will all be good to go by the end of May.

The thing that irritates me most about this process is that I think we already had the apparatus in place in Iowa to make this work much more smoothly.

In our little rural county, the county public health department took the lead. Anyone could call them and leave their health conditions and age, and they called you when it was your turn. Just using a phone for the high proportion of poor and elderly who have no internet. Notices in newspaper and bulletin boards at businesses and schools as well as social media.

We only have one pharmacy in town so while people could schedule through them, they also coordinated with public health to get in people in higher risk groups.

I am sure it is more complicated in larger counties with more pharmacies, but each county public health department should have been taking the lead in making sure the higher risk people knew the process they could take to get shots as soon as possible. It appears to be a statewide network with no state direction

I went to the website for my county just to familiarize myself with it for when I became eligible. I would've been in the last group, < 62, no pre-existing mortalities, etc. On a whim I filled out the online questionnaire (honestly), and was offered several dates and times to choose from. I felt a little sheepish about it but figured what the heck. I felt even more apprehensive walking into the building that morning, but immediately noticed a wide range of ages, only one person I would call morbidly obese (although my threshold is probably too high for that from what I understand), and nobody with obvious pre-existing conditions such as on O2, etc. It is impossible to spot a lot of medical problems just by looking at somebody though I realize. Anyhow, get Moderna #2 this coming Wednesday.

Hopefully some of these doses will be sent to Story County.

Maybe ISU will have extra doses since they were originally scheduled to use J &J? Some students may not want to return to campus for a 2nd shot. Might want to check with them.

i believe in story co you were to call McFarland or story co medical and get on a list. Then they went from oldest to youngest. I think the largest issue is high demand and not enough doses. The county just moved into the tier 2 vaccinations. Here is the information. https://www.mgmc.org/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccine/
