So you've never lived in Ankeny, but you're dissing it. I've lived in Iowa City, Ames and Ankeny, and Ankeny is by far my favorite. Guess we're each entitled to our opinion.

Yes, I’ve never lived there but growing up in Ames and having friends and family live there for quite some time I think I can generate an opinion. Ankeny has zero diversity of originality to it. That is fact. If you like that, so be it. Ankeny is the worst of the three you mentioned, and I hate the Hawkeyes. Iowa City is a fun town, Ames has some smaller town charm to it, and Des Moines is way better so that leaves Ankeny there at the way bottom.

Are those stats from 1998? Average of $150k seems crazy low. I know the smaller towns lower the averages but still....

That is the number they gave on the radio. Here is a site that shows the median home value at $158,148. It breaks down the numbers by the percentage of homes in each price range.

Are those stats from 1998? Average of $150k seems crazy low. I know the smaller towns lower the averages but still....

Yah, I wonder if that number isn't more the median than the mode. I would think with all the houses in the $300,000+ range that number would be pulled up quite a bit higher, even understanding that even nice houses in rural communities often struggle to get above $80,000 or so.

I believe the number, despite new construction in our small town selling at $239,000.

Most of town is very old houses in poor state of repair. House a block down the street sold for $12,000 in terrible shape and need of repair. Due to lack of rental properties and apartments, people buy these houses, maybe dump $5,000 in superficial repairs, and rent them out.

Drive around some urban, not suburban, areas and towns under 5,000 and this number is quite believable.
