Star Trek Universe Thread

Why isn't Discovery clicking? We had the same thoughts, but wondering why. It's visually great. It seems like we should be l over this one, but we aren't

Missing the humanity of the original or TNG?

I can't exactly put a finger on it. I don't really care for any characters and the stories just don't pull me in. Maybe it's all a little too slick and actually overproduced. For a modern scifi series I greatly prefer The Expanse. Lower Decks took a few episodes to calm down for me but by the end I loved it.

Having just finished an 8 year straight watch through from TOS through Enterprise I really don't care if Trek is standalone episodes or a continuous linked story. The one huge story (Dominion war) in DS9 was amazing, but some of the long stories in Enterprise actually sucked (Xindi) compared to the stand alone episodes or two part episodes.

I'm somewhat optimistic for the new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, as I thought Anson Mount as Captain Pike was one of the best parts of Discovery, and apparently it will be more episodic-based. But like you, I have a hard time putting my finger on what isn't fully hitting on everything. Part of me says I would prefer more episodic, while part of me generally likes more continuous stories. Maybe I just need to see what they do with Strange New Worlds to see what I prefer.

Even as someone who really likes discovery, I think it has some weaknesses.

The big one that hurts is the shorter seasons. This leads to a problem where the story has to be distilled down to the overall season arc and doesnt allow time to play with smaller concepts that would fit in just an episode. Those were some of the best episodes of the 90s trek.

Related to that, aside from a ton of focus on a couple characters, there's little depth in a lot of the others. It took until season 3 to get much depth on a character like Detmer who had been a prominent bridge crew member since episode 1. TNG and especially DS9 thrived in its characters that you really got to know over time. But again, with the shorter seasons there's less time for that both because the story takes precedent and also simply raw time (we have about as much discovery content as a season or so of TNG)

Last nights episode of Lower Decks was hilarious and one of the best of the series - especially if you are/were a fan of Voyager.

The previous weeks episode was also great where they added a Tamarian member to the crew. Tamarians speak in metaphors, as seen in the TNG episode "Darmok" so there was a lot of fun to be had with that.

Pretty strong start to S2. They are really starting to develop Tendi and Rutherford's characters this season. Tendi had some great moments in last nights episode.

I see it in my business of licensed collectibles and toys too. They went from almost no employees in consumer products, to a BOATLOAD, now I think they're finding balance between developing things in house and reaching out to other companies. It's really obvious finding their way in consumer product vs other licensors like WB/Uni/Disney.

Netflix is basically a one month Stranger Things subscription for me, the next best thing on there is actually several of their documentary series.

I'm actually finding more to like on P+ than Netflix lately, but I'm sure I'm abnormal there as a Trek fan. I am excited for S2 of Lower Decks. I actually like Picard viewed as a TNG movie. Discovery is a really tough watch for me so far, I don't know if I can get through S2.

With all due respect to the CW, Netflix is the CW of streaming services. Even if something is enjoyable it looks cheap as hell and you'd be kind of embarrassed to tell somebody you watch it.

I'm literally just down to Disney+ and a free Apple+ sub at this point and I don't miss anything.

Season finale of Lower Decks was last night, so for those of you wanting to binge the season/series now is your chance.

I thought S2 was great. The show is like a comedic roast of all things Star Trek, but there's a lot of respect to the source material. Beckett Mariner is so well written and the voice acting by Tawny Newsome is perfect - she could be one of the best Star Trek characters ever.

S1 was mostly one-off episodes, but S2 has started to find a story arch that is actually compelling. The latter episodes of S2 shows that there is much more to Lower Decks and the writers have done a great job laying the groundwork for S3. I'm very excited for where this show is heading.

Discovery season 4 premiere was really good. We are in for a helluva run on Star Trek shows the next few months ! And the Expanse too! Great time for sci fi.

Paramount just announced at their investors call that the whole Abrams Enterprise crew will be back for a new movie next year. This is the most exciting Trek news for me in a long time. I love that cast and really enjoyed all those Kelvin timeline movies. I know those movies are a bit divisive with some, but not me.

I've enjoyed every one, but each one I've enjoyed a bit less if I'm being honest. I hope they can try to recapture some of the excitement of the first one. I love that first one.

I'm basically the same. I'm kind of over the alternate timeline crew.

Apparently the biggest people surprised by Paramount's announcement of a new Star Trek movie shooting by year-end featuring all the Abram's cast was the Abram's cast, as none of their deals are finalized yet. Therefore, I'm not going to get too excited about this thing until I hear of deals getting done with the cast.

Wow, a lot of leverage just moved to the Actors if these negotiations are still ongoing.

Came here to say that if there are Trekkies that haven't checked out Stranger New Worlds, you're missing out. It's getting back to what I'd consider true Star Trek (mostly self-contained and nerdy episodes.) Strongly recommend to those that like the TV shows.

Its a far-cry from whatever Discovery is supposed to be. Picard S1&2 are entertaining, but more of a mini-series than StarTrek episodes. Feels great to have a solid Trek show again!

Strange New Worlds is just plain awesome! Great cast and great stories. I like the return to episodic storytelling. My favorites show on TV right now, by far.

Yeah, I enjoy discovery\picard (though i feel s3\4 of discovery have been pretty weak), but SNW is on another level.

Have really enjoyed SNW so far. Its not uber angsty, the characters dont all hate each other, doesnt take itself too seriously. Its fun, and plays in Roddenberrys optimistic world of "the better future we can choose to have".
